Leonardo opened his eyes. Something was different tonight. Something just not quite right or usual and it was starting to annoy him. The past couple of days had been like this. He'd been getting hardly any sleep. The questions plagued him into the early mornings. Cruelly, he'd fall asleep by four and be up again by five. It was starting to affect him and he needed to know what was up. What was it that he was missing?
He sighed and kicked back his covers restlessly. Checking his alarm clock - three - he rolled out of bed and padded silently to his bedroom door. He looked back at his katanas blearily, sighed and put them on, along with his bandanna and the rest of his gear. He was up now, he wasn't going to get back to sleep after this. Just a feeling.
Nothing seemed out of place, seemed like no one was up tonight for once. Walking past Raph's room confirmed that the red masked turtle was sound asleep inside. Snoring loudly as usual. He made his way down the stairs and into the kitchen expecting to see Mikey grabbing a 'midnight' snack, but found it quite empty and quiet.
The TV was off, the lights were dimmed, the lab was whirring away and luckily for Donnie, Leo couldn't hear any typing or clicking. He must have fallen asleep on his keyboard again. He peeked inside and found that his genius brother was doing exactly that. Leo shook his head and slipped back out. He'd have words again tomorrow.
So what was it?
He stopped and sniffed the air suddenly. That smell. Just a slight hint of it. He couldn't quite place it but he made his way to the source quickly, confused. Should he be cautious? He reached back to his katana anyway just in case, but it didn't feel like one of those times. Frowning, he found himself facing two sliding doors.
Sensei's doors. Onyx eyes narrowed, he held out his free hand to slide it open but stopped. He watched the light inside for a while, the flickering of a candle and that smell again. Sandalwood incense. Taking a breath to calm himself he sighed softly. He wasn't back. Don't get your hopes up again, Leo. Not again.
He let his hand fall and stared. This had better be a dream. Would he wake up in a few minutes and do all this again just to check? Was he imagining this?
No. This was real. Their father was finally home.
