"What's wrong with your neck?" Castle asked after seeing Kate rub it for the fourteenth time. Every so often she would turn her head just a little too far and wince in pain, trying not to let him see.
She stalled for a few seconds before finally answering with a weak, "Nothing."
"Sure," Castle extended the word, making the meaning behind it perfectly clear. I don't believe you! The pair continued to eat their Chinese takeout in silence, Beckett fighting the urge to rub her neck again.
"Are you sure your neck's okay?" Castle asked again, genuinely concerned.
"Its fine. I must have slept funny." The excuse was lame but it was the best she could come up with at the time. You've been a detective for how long and you can't lie convincingly yet? She mentally slapped herself.
"Yeah, besides the fact that it was fine at the precinct." After Castle had proven to her that he knew she was lying, he decided to drop the subject. He knew she would tell him if there was anything seriously wrong. "You want some music?"
Before she could respond he was half way across the room, making a bee line for her iPod dock. Willow Smith – Whip My Hair was on pause. "So that's what happened to your neck?"
"No!" Beckett defended. "I slept funny!"
Castle gave her a smile. "Face it detective. You hurt your neck whipping your hair back and forth!" He followed his teasing with a short rendition of the song, complete with moves.
"That's manly, Castle. You know the lyrics to a song, sung by a twelve year old girl."
"No…but," he stammered. "Alexis," he finally settled on a rick bottom answer, blaming his daughter.
"Yeah, sure," she teased. "You love whipping your hair back and forth!" To add effect to her teasing she attempted to whip her own hair. Big mistake. "Owwwwww!"
