Onwards!
A scream of surprise shattered the peace of the small island, causing birds to fly up with righteous squawks and fish to scatter in streaks of flashing light. Sora jumped up and ran over the bridge to the scrap of land where the scream had come from.
"Riku?!"
He scrambled over the oddly shaped tree and peered into the clear water. A soaking wet, silver haired teen was sitting up to his chest in the warm sea, looking the most shocked he had been in a very long time. Sora started to giggle uncontrollably.
"You fell in? So much for the guy who conquered darkness!"
Riku just scowled.
"Help me up here Sora."
Sora reached out his hand, bracing himself to pull Riku up. Riku suddenly grinned and yanked Sora off the edge to join him. Sora screamed as he felt the ground disappear from under him, quickly being replaced with water.
"Riku! We're both wet now! If you had wanted to go swimming we could've at least got changed."
"The sun will dry us off in no time!"
Sora turned on his killer pout and crossed his arms. Riku just grinned and leapt on him, sending them both sprawling under the water. In a flash Riku was half running, half swimming towards the golden shores of Destiny Isles with Sora hot on his heels, shrieking blue murder. Their laughter echoed off the sun kissed water, filling the island with sounds of childish glee.
"Give up?!"
"Riku! Get off me! Argh!"
Sora managed to push the other boy off his and evade any further attacks by promptly sitting on Riku.
"Hah! Do you give up?"
"Yes! Yes, I give up! You win Sora! Just let me up!"
Sora grinned and rolled off, onto his back to rest on the sand with a sigh. He ran a hand through his now tangled hair.
"Rikuuuu... My hair's all messy now!"
Riku looked over and grinned at him.
"Let it dry and then I'll get the knots out for you... You might have to do mine too."
He laughed, running his own hand though his shining locks. Sora smiled and crossed his arms behind his head, closing his eyes.
"Hey Sora, where's everyone else?"
"Tidus, Selphie and Wakka are at some competition, and I think Kairi's at her house."
"Oh..."
Silence fell over them as the sun slowly made it's path across the blue, blue sky, gently drying out clothing and hair with its warmth. Hours passed like minutes in the comfortable lull.
"Hey Riku, I think your hair's dry now."
"Hmmn? Oh, yeah."
Riku heaved himself upright and sat in front of Sora, who slowly started to thread his fingers through hair the colour of moonlight, gently teasing out the tuggy knots. Riku sighed softly and closed his eyes, leaning back into Sora.
"I might have to push you in water more of- OW!"
He yelped and turned to Sora who just grinned innocently.
"Sorry, did that hurt?"
"Hmmph."
"I've got them all out. It's your turn!"
Still grumbling, Riku crawled around to sit behind Sora, shuffling close and poking the back of his head.
"Look Sora, the sun's setting."
Sora nodded and smiled, leaning back to rest on Riku.
"Yeah... It's the only time light and dark aren't fighting..."
As the sun slowly sank beneath the ocean, all you could hear was the gentle lap of waves against the shadow bathed shore, the wind singing in the trees and the steady breathing of the two teens sitting on the deserted beach as the last rays of sun danced over them, entwining their hair and blurring their outlines until they were a single being, all alone with each other and the worlds they fought to save.
