It's close to zero degrees.
Bonnie leans into the wind, tapered eyes hunting for the survivor. Flinging a look back over her shoulder, she catches sight of Kai hunched over something, his feet deep in pure white snow. There's snow as far as the eye can see, broken only by a rugged forest where icicles cling to its fleshless branches. She casts a look toward the murky sky, alert for the silver twilight that is readily approaching.
"Anything?" the words leap from her chapped lips, the gruff tone startling her. They haven't spoken much since they have been on Damon's trail and her voice has become as savage as the land itself.
"He's wounded" Kai declares, rubbing pink, frothy blood between his thumb and forefinger, "it's a lung shot" he adds as he rises to his feet, brushing sludge and snow down the front of his jeans. He picks up his crossbow and tosses it back over his right shoulder.
"How long?" Bonnie asks, shouldering her Marlin model rifle, fingers curling around its Maplewood handle.
"I told you we should have used an arrow" he says, combing a hand through his frost-rimmed hair to pacify his irritation "He'd bleed out faster and he'd be quicker to track down"
"How long, Kai?" she snarls as if to remind him that she's in charge. He's been prone to forget his place in the family ever since Kol's death.
"He shouldn't be too far; his heart is still pumping which means he'll bleed out faster" he sighs before fixing his misted grey eyes back to her as a slight smile tickles his lips, "Hunting is a patient sport, Mrs Mikaelson" he says, swiftly brushing past her. Bonnie bristles at his tone because calling her Mrs Mikaelson is a jab on his part, a jab because of her husband's unnatural passing and a cheap shot at the friendship they used to share before she married a Mikaelson.
"It would do you well to remember that" the words are thrown over his shoulder as he dips his head under snow crested branches, feet moving light and swift in the shingled snow. After a long trek in foot deep snow, the trail ceases and as Bonnie glares back at Kai, her ears prick up. It's a curious sound, life and death in laboured gasps coming from behind a cluster of sleet wet rocks. She stares curiously at her companion a while longer as the moaning persists and then Kai jerks his head motioning for them to move. Her first instinct is to unshoulder the shotgun, cradling it under her right arm, fingers poised over the trigger. Meanwhile, Kai pulls out a knife strapped to his leg because he knows and she knows that he is faster with a knife. Ever since they were kids, Kai has always been skilled with the blade; it's one of the things she recalls about him.
"Mr Salvatore" Bonnie announces inquisitively, cocking her head to one side as she stares down at him. He looks mangled; bloody lips quivering as frozen breath escapes his mouth and settles on the vaporous air around them. Bonnie takes aim at his left kneecap and pulls the trigger. Damon screams, clutching at it as he gasps for breath in the biting wind. The shot from the firearm rings around the spruce forest for a while before it dies down to the restless air that surrounds them.
"This, Mr Salvatore is an animal trap, "Bonnie says, resting her hand on the contraption snared around his left leg, "it was forged by blacksmiths in the seventeenth century, "she continues as she examines the blood gushing from his leg, "initially it was made to catch rabbits until men discovered more nefarious purposes for it" she pats the iron before looking up at her associate.
"This is my very good friend, Kai Parker" she signals with her head, "he's an animal tracker and a very good watch dog" she smiles and can almost hear Kai scoff at him being referred to as a watchdog but she doesn't care.
"Curva!" Damon spits, glaring at them through crystal coated eyelashes.
"I tell him to go fetch and he brings back good spoils, like you for instance" Bonnie endures, unaffected by his screams and his taunts because she has waited too long for this moment, waited too long to pay back Kol's murderer.
"Dai dracu!" Damon growls, his anger now directed at Kai, Bonnie's soldier.
"Save your breath" Kai retaliates, twirling the knife through his fingers as he fists Damon's hair.
"Don't rush me, Mr Salvatore" Bonnie seethes, relishing the tangible silence of the woods "I want to enjoy you"
