Mac sat down on the couch with a sigh. His eyes never stopped stinging since he woke up this morning. It was like a giant grey cloud was hovering over him. Mikey knew something was wrong with his boy and he's never left his side since Mac woke up.
Today was the anniversary of his mother's death.
Mikey looked up when his little blonde charge sniffled and blew his nose. He whined worriedly at the sight of tears welling up in Mac's eyes. He hated seeing his boy so upset. Earlier, the older man, Jack, Mikey remembered, had called his boy and talked to him, comforted him over the phone as Mac started to cry. Jack had said he would be over soon before ending the call.
Mikey laid his head down on Mac's lap, curling himself around his blonde charge. He wanted to somehow erase Mac's sad face and make him smile again. The husky pup grumbled to himself, an almost dog-like frown on his face as he thought.
Soon, they both heard a car pull up out front. Mikey perked up and growled protectively, barking only once before the door opened and revealed Jack. The husky would've gone to go greet the older agent properly, but he didn't really feel like leaving Mac in that moment.
"Hey, buddy." Jack quietly greeted them as he came over after shutting the door. He sat down on Mac's other side, draping an arm over his young partner's shoulders in comfort.
"Hey." Mikey didn't like how shaky and hoarse Mac's voice sounded. "Thanks for coming over, even though you didn't have to."
Jack paused for a moment. His voice was soft when he continued. "Of course I'd be here. This day brings back a lot emotion for you, Mac. As well as a lotta memories. Now I know you don't like sharing your feelings and all that, but I just want you to know that it's ok to feel sometimes. There's nothing wrong with that, brother."
"I know but it's just," Mac's voice caught and Mikey licked his hand, replacing his head back down on to Mac's lap. His boy gently pet Mikey's head in response, staring at each other sadly. "I miss her so much, Jack. I know it's been years since she died but, it doesn't make the pain go away."
Jack pulled Mac into a comforting hug then as Mac cried into his neck, clinging to the older agent's shirt like a lifeline. Mikey squeezed passed Jack and somehow managed to get in between the pair. His soft head resting on Mac's shoulder as the blonde continued to cry his poor aching heart out.
After a few minutes, Mac started to quiet down. He still remained in Jack's hold with Mikey laying on top of him. The older agent got him a tissue and he blew his nose again and wiped his tears. Mikey adjusted himself so he laid on Mac's chest.
"You ok, kid?" Jack asked while rubbing his brother's back. The Delta felt him nod in return. Mac smiled a little when the husky pup looked at him. He knew this day would always be hard, but at least he had his best friend and Mikey there to help him through it.
