Could you imagine not being able to see? Not know what red, orange, green, blue, pink, purple, white, or any colours really look like. Not being able to look someone in the eye. Just being able to tell someone or something was there. Not being able to write, read, or even dream. Never knowing what your parents, friends, spouse- everyone you love, and even yourself look like. Well, trust me, it sucks.
From all the times Sokka, Katara, Zuko and Aang saying "Hey! Look at that!" and all the following "oohs!" and "ahhs!" to Katara saying "Ooh he's cute!" all I saw, were blobs. Technically I didn't even see them, I just knew they were there. Ok, a little more than just blobs, a heart beat, frame, posture, etc. Don't get me wrong, it was awesome to be able to see that much. But still. I bet you take advantage of your sight everyday. Ever try to do something with your eyes shut, like eat, get dressed, shower? Ok, not too hard. Now go to a complete strangers house and try the same thing. Not too easy, huh? After being in the same place for so long it becomes routine, but when traveling the world, that is a rare luxury.
One of the good things about being blind is I loved people for who they actually were. I never saw Sokka's face when I fell in love with him, never saw his body. Like seriously what the hell does a 'nose' look like? But this is what made our love special, it was true love, for how could a blind girl lust?
I could tell sometimes they all forgot that I was blind, and it actually made me feel good, I felt normal.
Ever since the devolopement of Republic City there were many advances in culture. Like the Soto Mobile, but long before that, the first contact lenses were made. It was 1508 and a man named Leonardo Da Vinci had the idea. They were different though, they were specially to help the blind see. Since I was Toph Bei Fong, clearly blind, well known, and rich I was the perfect person to try these lenses.
Sokka and I were in the Fire Nation when we received word that Mr. Da Vinci had wanted me to test his invention. So Sokka and I made the voyage to Republic City. Once we found Mr. Da Vinci's 'store' we were amazed. We as in Sokka, going on and on about all the 'glasses' that helped improve people's vision.
We were in the store a few moments before a man came running towards us "Miss Bei Fong! Ooh and friend." He said the last part slyly.
"Yeah, hi." I hid the enthuasim and anxiety in my vouce.
He went over how they were a prototype and he would surgically have to put them in and remove them, and that they lasted about a month. He explained how they should work anad only expected me to see blobs and colours with these lenses. The second pair I should be able to make out faces, and my sight progressively getting better.
I laid where he had told me to in a room where he would put the lenses in my eyes. I felt a pinch on my neck, and must've been put to sleep because that's all I remember before waking up.
