Summary: It's playing with fire, and he knew it too, and eventually someone was going to get burned. One of these days he was going to go too far.

"It doesn't matter anyway. I'm done with them."

He can feel Dean's eyes boring into the back of his head, but Sam doesn't turn his gaze away from they dark scenery flying by outside the window. Dean didn't expect him to give so easily, Sam knows it was well as he knows his way around every weapon in their cache. Dean expected a fight, not quiet acquiescence.

But like he said, it doesn't matter anymore. He's done with them. It's playing with fire, and he knew it too, and eventually someone was going to get burned. One of these days he was going to go too far. No matter how much he tried to deny it, the fear still sat cold in his belly; one day he would cross that line.

And then there would be no turning back.

Dean would be forced to keep his promise. And he just couldn't do that to his brother.

He knew Dean was afraid of his powers, maybe even afraid to see what Sam could do. Sam hated putting that fear in his brother's eyes every time he used them. It was different when he was a passive participant, a victim to his visions. But like Jack, Sam had a choice. And he chose, while Dean was cold and rotting in the ground, to flip the switches and embrace his power head on.

He chose wrong.

It was like there is a dark pit inside him. He keeps circling it, nearing closer to the edge with each and every demon he exorcises with his mind. And one of these days he's going to get too near the edge, slipping right down in. And there would be no one to save him. Not Dean. Not even Ruby. He would be what he always feared and loathed.

No. He wasn't going to let it get that far. He still had control. He still had a choice.

He wasn't going to use his powers anymore, he promised himself. There would be no dark demonic future for him. Not if he had a choice. He was fighting on Heaven's side and always would.

"I'm done with everything," Sam promised.

"Really?" Dean sounded torn between being thankful and in complete disbelief. "Well that's a relief. Thank you."

"Don't thank me, I'm not doin' it for you." For the first time since they got back in the car, Sam looked over at his brother. "Or for the angels. Or for anyone."

Dean nodded silently, glancing over once at his brother, but his expression was still troubled.

"This is my choice."
