"Spence? Are you alright? You sound awful."
"Um, yeah, getting a cold I think." He let out a shaky cough, and his words were a little wheezy. "I just, uh, needed to talk to you."
"Must be important, Taking time out of a case to call lil' old me?" Ren put down the book she was reading, and pressed pause on her Ipod dock. Spencer's breathing was labored, and his voice was cracking.
"Just…you're my best friend, Ren."
"Well duh, who else would put up with you as often as I do?" She curled her feet underneath her body, and pulled one of her many throw pillows into her lap. It doesn't take a mind reader to know something was wrong with her besty.
"I probably shouldn't be calling you at all right now, so let me talk, alright? "
She could picture him running his hands through his hair, the way he always does when he's agitated.
'Keep it up and that pretty head of hair you've been working so hard on growing is gonna fall right out.'He was probably licking his lips too, the way he does when he isn't exactly sure how to say whatever it is he needs to say.
"Sure, Spence. Anything you need." Threads were coming loose from the pillow in Rens lap as she slowly picked the edge apart. Soon she'd be seeing cotton stuffing and what feels like beans from a bean bag.
"Do you remember the day we met?" He asked.
Spencer could hear the smile in her voice as she gave a step by step walkthrough of their first meeting; chess in the park. Ren didn't know the king from the queen, but her younger brother was in love with the game.
At first the thought of a grown man playing chess with kids was a little…creepy, to say the least, but the more the two talked, he more intrigued she became with the enigma named Spencer Reid.
A mystery no more, Spencer is now an open book to Ren Stewart.
"I know something's wrong, Spence. I can hear it in your voice." And the way you just may have coughed up your right lung."I can't really go into details. It's case related. I just called….I just called to tell you I love you."
"I love you too, silly. You know that." He was her best friend, after all. Her confidant, if you will.
"No, I mean…I mean I'm in love with you. I think I always have been. I just wish I would have told you sooner."
Silence. Silence wasn't exactly music to Spencer's ears at that exact moment.
Ren was sure she looked like a fish, mouth opening and closing immediately after.
How did she not realize this?
"Ren, I have to go, ok?"
"Uh…yeah. Sure."
"Bye, Renny."
"Wait!" She cried, standing up and losing her ruined pillow in the process.
"What?"
"I love you too,"
