A knock on the door
Shutters banging against the house
These noises awoke me from my slumber. I had no idea who or what could be causing these noises so early in the morning. The sun had not yet risen. The first thing I saw were berries on the bedside table as if someone had left them for me to eat. They were of the bad color. It is difficult to enter my room without being noticed, as stairs must be climbed, or a window must be opened from a ladder.
I was not scared, but I was curious as to what cauded the creatures here tonight. We grow up living in fear. Fear is our life. Just once would I like to gaze into the creatures eyes and know what I really fear.
If the Elders ever heard of this notion, they would tell me I am unorthodox or even foolish. The Elders are our overseers and nothing is ever as it seems. Ever since I am able to remember, the village has lost at least one person a year. We are so small how can this be?
Is there life outside these fences and watch towers? Do our safety colored cloaks really keep us safe? We need to question our structure because our village is no longer safe.
