Sometimes, Seto wondered what meaning his life had, or why he continued living it. His life was nowhere near normal, but he hadn't experienced "normal", so how could he compare himself to it? What was normal? Obviously, normal wasn't working for several hours straight and owning a company before reaching the age of an adult. But that wasn't all he was, just the CEO of Kaiba Corp, was it?
He didn't live with his parents. In fact, he was legally emancipated. He took care of himself. He didn't have a mother bothering him when he overslept, or making him dinner before school. Nor did he have a father to give him advice when he needed it, or to introduce him to fun things he could share with others as well.
He went to school, but unlike most people, he already knew everything. He knew more than the teachers. But school was the normal thing to do, and it meant less questions asked. And he could be close to his rival, but it made it kind of hard when your rival didn't consider you one.
After school, he would go to work, too much of his time spent doing work he'd hired others to do. He called his employees incompetent, but he also knew it was too hard to live up to his immensely high standards. It was impossible for him not to have high standards. But he expected them to work with their all, and were they really? There were few workers he placed much value on. Even when he was home, he was still busy. Much of his work could be done from home, and so he did. But that gave him little free time. There was too much work to be done. He persisted in achieving his goals for the company, but it really was a drain.
He frowned whenever he would walk into the mansion, and Mokuba had fallen asleep waiting for him. He'd take off his trench coat and drop his suitcase, picking Mokuba up to take him to bed. Once in a while, Mokuba would stir and open his eyes, giving his big brother a half-asleep smile. Seto would always return the smile. Even though it made him feel guilty, Mokuba's happiness made him happy too.
He didn't have a mother, but he did have Mokuba sneaking sandwiches into his briefcase to get him to eat. He didn't have a father to give him advice, but he had Mokuba to give advice to, and to sometimes amaze him with his own. He had too much work, but he also had Mokuba to take him away from it. He didn't make friends with his peers and sometimes felt lonely, but Mokuba was the best friend and company he could ever ask for. Even though he felt guilty for not spending enough time with him, Mokuba didn't blame him for it, and it was always worth the wait. Even though he didn't smile much, Mokuba did enough for the both of them, and forced him to smile too. Mokuba needed him, they needed eachother. And above all, Mokuba gave him a reason to live.
Maybe someday, he'd have more. But for now, that was all he needed.
