Not Goodbye

"Do you want to go with me?" Her voice was smooth, unwavering, her face blank, but for a second I saw a flicker of hope cross her eyes.

I couldn't respond, I didn't know what I wanted, I wasn't sure of anything anymore.

"Tell you what, I'm gonna do this and when a car stops you don't even have to think about it, you just know and you decide." I slowly nodded, "And you just do what is right in your heart."

She slowly started walking backwards, and I just stood there. She was three steps away from me, and to me that was too far. My legs started working and I followed after her. She walked backwards, her thumb out to the road, and me facing forwards next to her. Our hands were close, occasionally grazing each other, and with each small touch a small tingle would shoot through my arm.

A truck slowed down, stopping a few meters in front of us. I looked to it, then looked to Legs, looked in her eyes. I became lost in there, I saw all the hope, the want, the need, the fear, everything that she was feeling in that moment, all in those sparkling brown eyes.

I took a deep breath, "I'll never forget you."

She turned away from me, she didn't even try to hide the pain that she was feeling, but she laughed. She walked towards the truck, but turned before she reached the door, "You're in my heart, man." That's all she had to say before I broke.

I ran to her, as fast as I could, I ran to her arms. "I love you." I whispered in her ear before I pulled back and captured her lips with mine. I did what I should have that night on the roof.

I pulled back only when I needed air, and looked into her eyes, "This isn't goodbye, not yet, I'll find you, I'll always find you." I said before letting go of her.

She gave a soft smile, then turned back to the truck. She opened the door and took the step up, but before she got in she turned back to me, "You're in my heart, love." And with that she stepped into the truck and closed the door. I watch the truck slowly pull away and back onto the road. I watched that truck until it was out of my sight, and after that I still stood there, thinking of the day that I would see Legs again, thinking of the day I would see the woman I loved again.
