Doesn't Remember

She doesn't remember when they became these people.

When the walls were built out of anger and disappointment.

They used to be able to count on each other.

To share the pain and joy.

And now. . .

Now there seemed to only be blame and mistrust.

There had been a times when promises were made and kept.

Now they were broken for the 'greater good.'

They had once been a team, sharing everything.

Making decisions together.

Now, the information he gave her was filtered by others.

He listened to them.

Made his decisions based on their opinions.

Never letting her know what he had to decide or what he had.

Forcing her to give up her beliefs to support his.

To back down from her wants and beliefs.

She could no longer speak freely, even when only with him.

(Words, thoughts, and expressions were weapons to be used in attacks that were never foretold.)

There was no privacy.

No safety.

There was only fear and isolation.

Voiceless bodies surrounding them, but unable to protect them.

A disease lying in wait to take him if the job didn't.

(Although she was starting to believe that both would conspire to take him from her for good.)

She had lost everything to him.

Her heart.

Her love.

Her identity.

Her job.

She would be damned if she'd lose a child.

(After all, her soul was already slowly dying along with his body.)

She didn't dream anymore.

Didn't hope.

She just went through the motions.

Hating him for doing this to her.

Hating herself for giving him the power to.

For not seeing it coming.

Not prying deeper to get to the demons that were haunting him.

She doesn't remember when they became these people.

And frankly, she isn't even sure she wants to.
