TRUTH AMIDST THE LIES
By: Vanessa Sgroi
It's good to see him smile again. Good to see him laugh. I've never seen either occurrence in abundance, growing up the way we did and living the life we do, but now it's nearly nonexistent. Most people don't realize that my older brother has a smile that lights up a room. And a laugh that's truly contagious. If you're lucky enough to hear the real thing.
I offer a halfhearted, and wholly fake, smile of my own when Dean glances at me across the table, delight still shining on his face something Charlie's said. I take a pull on the beer he's just handed to me, but the brew is as bitter as brimstone against my tongue, turned by a noxious mixture of guilt over a plentitude of lies and stark terror coursing through my system.
There is one absolute truth I've recently told though. One that, for me, counterbalances all lies I force past my tongue. I cannot lose Dean again. I meant it when I said it to Charlie. I've meant it even more every time I've said it to Dean, even as I see the skepticism lurking in his eyes.
If I lose him, I lose me. Period.
