I do not own Avengers or Agents of Shield.
I do adore Phil Coulson.
Number One Fan
"Where've you been?"
Agent Phillip J. Coulson nonchalantly cleared his throat, falling into step down a nondescript hallway under telling fluorescent lights.
"Nowhere. I mean, you know, busy."
Melinda May raised dubious eyebrow at his purposefully evasive answer.
"You were watching him again, weren't you?"
The suited man stubbornly maintained his unassuming facade.
"Well, you know, part of the job. He'll need help when he wakes up. Guidance into our time."
May didn't have to wait long.
"And he really shouldn't wake up alone. That's not how to treat a national treasure."
Melinda May almost smiled.
"Did you gently brush his hair?"
Coulson managed to look mildly offended.
"No. Of course not."
Then he shrugged.
"The nurse'd already done it."
Melinda May did smile then.
"Got the cards on you?"
Her 'superior' shook his head casually.
"What is this, an interrogation?"
She didn't respond.
He eventually shrugged again.
"They're in my locker. In protective cellophane."
The stoic woman nodded sagely.
"Right. Because-"
As Coulson burst into explanation.
"I mean, they're a vintage set, May. You don't just carry them around on a day to day basis. Something might happen to them. I mean, it took me-"
May's amusement was subtle but undeniable.
"Years to collect them. Yeah, I know. You told me."
Phil squinted his eyes at her.
"Hey, if you had the chance to see Peggy Carter in her prime, you telling me you wouldn't fangirl just a little bit?"
She cast him a disparaging glance.
"I do not fangirl, Phil."
Coulson didn't blink, only continued to silently question.
And she relented.
Just a little.
"Okay. Maybe just a little."
Captain America's number one fan smiled, triumphant.
Perhaps a beat too early.
"So," May continued, a hint of a tease coloring her dry tone. "You finish your 'I heart Captain America' cross-stitch pillow yet?"
Phil rolled his eyes, exasperated.
"May . . ."
This little ditty I wrote because I'm working through Agents of Shield season 5 and oh my sweet Christmas I needed to breathe.
So, funsies!
