This is my first attempt at writing a fanfic for Bleach and any feedback would be appreciated. Just keep comments/suggestions/criticism polite, please…
Why Do Birthdays Have To Exist?
Hitsugaya Toshiro was happy for the 364 days of the year that were his unbirthdays and miserable for the 1 day of the year that was his birthday.
He'd already lost count of how old he was and estimated some number close to 150 years, give or take a few decades, so what was the use of celebrating just another year? Nobody's exact ages were ever known in Soul Society and in any case, how many candles would they have to blow out the next time General Yamamoto's birthday came around?
"Just 15 hours of work to go before you can go back to bed and forget all about this birthday crap," he muttered to himself as he attempted to smooth down his messy white hair and pinned Hyorinmaru to the green sash.
The dragon materialized next to his partner, easily dwarfing him. It was pretty rare for the lazy hunk of meat to come out of his frozen inner world, thought Hitsugaya.
"I heard that," the dragon chided gently as he leaned down and nuzzled the shinigami's brow. "Happy birthday, little one. It's snowing outside, you know."
Hitsugaya smiled and hugged the dragon's smooth, cold neck. "You giant bastard…Thanks. You're the one being I'll never get tired of hearing that from."
"Might want to take that back, because I have a bad feeling about this birthday…" With that cryptic message the old spirit vanished.
Hitsugaya shrugged. Sometimes that geezer was a little too weird even for him.
He walked out of his quarters and passed several shinigami on the way who all inclined their heads toward him and murmured, "Happy birthday, Hitsugaya-taicho."
He nodded and said politely, "Thank you."
Izuru Kira approached Hitsugaya as though afraid to approach him. "Uh…"
"Yes, Kira?" the captain asked shortly as he fended off Ukitake's sixth offer of candy.
'Matsumoto-san asked me to deliver this to you…"
Hitsugaya accepted the box-shaped object and the letter suspiciously. "Oh Lord."
Dear Captain,
Happy birthday! My little captain is finally growing up! I'm so proud!
Since you didn't like the teddy bear I gave you last year I thought this might be a little better for you to show you how much of a big boy I acknowledge you're getting to be!
Hugs and Kisses,
Ran-chan
Hitsugaya sighed ruefully. She probably wrote this when she was drunk. Well, he'd humor her and take a look at it. He tore the wrapping apart curiously.
Hyorinmaru's dark chuckling pierced through his stunned mind.
That night, two workers at the local health shop were gossiping as they cleaned up for tomorrow. An unusually forceful ice storm had swept through Seretei that day.
"Humph." The burlier of the two workers wiped his forehead. "Might as well take a break….Oy, Hikaru! See anything interesting on shift today?"
The slighter man sat on a crate. "Yeah, Lieutenant Matsumoto came in here and bought the big pack."
The first man raised his eyebrows, "Seriously?"
"Yeah, wonder who she's datin' now? 'E'll get the shock o' his lifetime when she gives him that box o' condoms."
