In Vain

By Kurai Hitokiri

------------

His mighty fists relaxed as the years flew by, his power protecting the gorgeous land that had once been his home.

The rolling hills and plains were shaped under his thumb, and sometimes named by his prevailing voice. He was a symbol of hope and courage to the ones that he once saved so long ago.

Time was ticking away like tiny grains of sand, slowly moving through the tiny gap in between the years. Each moment to him was precious as he watched his descendants thrive upon the land, living happily and dying content.

No longer did hatred or lust for power embody itself, or hang about like a dark cloud in the minds of young children. Instead the races of Fire, Heaven, Earth, and Sky blended together to create perfect harmony and Good reigned, forming the first Golden Age after the many troubled times.

As ordered by the Goddesses, he often looked upon the Seal of the Dark One. Chains bound the Dark One in place, gagging him and his every twisted desire. He suffered as the people had for the seven years of his dark reign. For a time, it appeared that evil would never again plague the world.

However, with time, the seal cracked, and darkness began to ooze forth.

Power came to misshape the innocent, demons arose among the peaceful races, and threatened the peace that had been brought about by sacrifice and bloodshed.

Sages crowded around the leak, using the best of their powers to keep the seal intact, and to fix the breach upon the pure realm. For a time they were able to keep darkness at bay, but eventually it overpowered them, turning them into grotesque beasts and ultimately dooming their souls to suffer in oblivion.

The Dark One emerged and began an onslaught of evil upon the land closest to the Goddesses. Slaughter and chaos ensued, blood pouring from the skies as though the Goddesses had been wounded.

He watched as the people begged feverishly for the Hero to return, his evil destroying blade in his hand to smite the evil that caused this apocalyptic nightmare. However, as the years trickled away, the Hero never appeared.

So, after much deliberation, the Goddesses warned a chosen few to take refuge on the tall mountains that surrounded their once peaceful home.

Din, Farore, and Nayru combined their powers, making the once blue skies turn to fire, thunder crackle through the sky, and water surge forth from the skies, flooding the land and smothering every life in its path.

All the Hero could do was watch as his beloved land of Hyrule was swallowed beneath the torrential downpour of rain, as the few lives remaining were crushed beneath mighty swells of water, crying out for their Hero in vain.
