Behind closed eyes
Summary: When Lil closes her eyes, she sees only red. Drabble.

Early-morning traffic passes the car.
But overall, the highway is empty, and on the backseat Lilly is blinded by the halo of the rising sun in the East. When she closes her eyes the world is tinged red, a strange analogy to her own life. But while the thought normally is scary, she only feels peace today.
Against the morning sun, Scotty is a dark shadow without contours.
His eyes on the road he drives on steadily and every memory of similar drives they shared before (forests and rain and country blues and darkness) are flooded away by the calmness that settles over her as she continues to watch him. Next to her, Chris' light weight is warm and reassuring and even though she has every reason to worry about her little sister – about dehydration abuse starvation depression confinement – everything she feels is relief. Relief at the fact that Chris is alive. The bundle in her arms sleeps, too, only moving occasionally. Absentmindedly, she wonders when realization will hit her: Realization at the fact that she is an aunt now, that she has a niece and that her sister is back, that she now is responsible not only for her baby sister but for her sister's baby, as well. That she will have to face Boss tomorrow and tell him everything, and that she might have gone too far this time by asking Scotty to come with her. But every partner who lies for you is worth dying for and if it helps him she'll gladly take her leave.
The road is endless and the sun blinding. As the skyline of Philadelphia appears on the horizon, she looks up only to meet Scotty's glance in the rear view mirror. And she cannot help it: the smile spreads on her fact almost automatically, and Scotty's frown turns into a grimace that turns into a real smile. Chris stirs in her arms but does not wake, as if she reads her sister's thoughts:
As long as Scotty is there, they are safe.
Lil closes her eyes and the world around her turns scarlet.
