A/N: This started out as an assignment in Photography. Busy work, so to say. And it reminded me of Scout in To Kill A Mockingbird, so that's what I did. And I'm not Harper Lee...and as of now, I can't think of a name for the story, so it's dubbed Scout. If you think of a good name, review or pm me!
Scout
I raced home, my bare feet slapping the rocky ground. It felt good to run with the wind flowing with me, pushing me farther and farther, faster and faster. 'Course it probably helped that I was winning. Jem had bet me two whole pennies that he could beat me home, even though he had to run something to Miss Maudie's house for Cal.
As I got to my house, I slowed down and bounded up the two wooden steps to the front porch. Cal was there, and I ran to her.
"Hey, Scout," she said, "how was your day?"
"It was great! I raced Jem home from the creek and won!"
Cal lifted me up to sit on the railing. She gently pushed some of my hair behind my ear; her eyes grew soft. "I have something to tell you, sweetie." I heard the change in the atmosphere happen.
"What's wrong? It is something that happened to Atticus?" I asked, suddenly scared.
A tear slowly slipped down Cal's cheek.
A/N: Did you like it? Please review!
