After the rebellion and Prim's death, Katniss kept Prim's room in pristine condition and even added to it. Her and Peeta decorated the wall with images of flowers, added green carpet the color of spring grass, painted the furniture with vines and flowers, and put pink and green bedding on the twin bed. She vowed to herself silently that it would stay that way and would never be used. Often, she sat on the bed with a primrose in her hand and turned it over and over in her grasp, with tears in her eyes. Peeta left her alone whenever she got this way, but he was always worried about her. Years passed. On a lovely spring day, Katniss came home with the news that she was pregnant. Months after that, she discovered it was to be a girl. That night, she laid down in Prim's bed and cried herself to sleep. She feared more than anything that every time she looked at her own daughter, she would be forced into painful memories and the thought of nightmares that never ended. That all changed after the little girl was born, though. She had dark hair like her mother, and Peeta's blue eyes. Though they had also been the color of Prim's eyes, Katniss was able to not think of it as a bad thing. This remarkable little angel was hers, and raising her was going to be her future. Several nights after the baby was born, she walked into Prim's bedroom and sat down on that bed one last time. The next day, she removed the bed and replaced it with a crib. That room became Rue Madge Mellark's bedroom, and it was then that Katniss was finally able to let go of her sister's death and move on with her life.
