David Vega leans against the wall sighing. Sitting across the room at the kitchen table is Mr. West.
"So," West breaking the vow of silence. "When did your girl tell you?"
Vega shakes his head out of deep thought and turns to him. "What?"
"When did Tori tell you that she was…you know…"
"Loud and proud?"
West rubs the back of his neck nervously, "Along those lines."
"I don't know. I guess I've always known. They say that nobody chooses to be…that way."
West stands up. "Couldn't have been more awkward when Jade told me."
"How?"
"She strolls in while I was reading my paper and just told me 'Dad, I think I like girls' and just walks away."
The two men share a chuckle. Vega picks up a mug of coffee and sips it. It's losing its heat but he doesn't care.
"You know," Vega choosing his words carefully. "I wasn't exactly crazy about it at first."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I mean where I grew up, being called gay was a curse. We acted like there was nothing worse than that."
"I think we all have that interaction. I mean, for me it was mostly something I was never exposed to. It all seemed alien to me."
Vega takes a deep breath and releases it. "Tori and I fought so bad that night. I just couldn't accept that she was one of…them. But the more I thought of it, I realized how little she was interested in boys. But, there was nothing wrong with her." He looks down at his coffee. "She helped make me see. See that there was nothing wrong with being gay. It's who you are, you know." Vega wipes tears away from his eyes. "I knew then that the only thing that made it hard for people like her was people like me."
"And you didn't want to be one of those people." West adds.
"Never again. And I wouldn't tolerate anyone else who would be."
"It's funny. As they start getting older, you wonder about who they're going to marry one day. When Jade started dating Tori, her grades were improving and she stopped wearing sleeves in the summer."
Vega was a cop for years so he understood the subtext. He didn't know that Jade was once that depressed.
"She just seemed…happier. As happy as she was when her mother was still alive."
Vega nods. "I wanted Tori to be safe. She's a good kid but I was always nervous because she isn't exactly tough. She's determined when she sets her mind to something but in the back of my mind, I was always afraid for her when she went out into the world. Jade would destroy anyone who would think of harming her." He smiles. "I admire that."
West smiles at that even if he did hear those words from a cop. "So, you're saying that my kid loves your kid more."
Vega makes a face. "I'm just saying…"
"Oh yeah," West is now standing inches from Vega.
"Yeah. What of it?"
"So," West folding his arms. "Who's paying for everything? We've got two brides, don't forget."
"Well, I got the ceremony."
"Then, I'll pay for the honeymoon."
Vega puffs out his chest. "And I'll get the flowers."
"I'll take care of the catering."
"Alright then, I guess I'll hire the photographer."
"Bartender."
Vega gives West a look but West just smiles back. "Oh, yeah, we're not having a dry wedding."
"I will also get the reception."
West raises his glass. "Rehearsal dinner. Got a great restaurant lined up."
Vega snorts at this. "I got that beat," setting down his coffee. "I will also flip for the limos."
West nods and grins devilishly. "I guess that just leaves the dresses."
"Shoes, too?"
"Shoes."
"Bastard." Vega pats his future brother-in-law on the back.
"So Vega," father mirroring daughter. "You ready for this?"
"No dad is ever ready."
