Disclaimer: I do not own the Gallagher Girl series, it belongs to Ally Carter. Enjoy!
Author's note: This is just a short story I wrote. It may make sense and it may not. It takes place during: Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover, when Zach and Cammie meet the first time.
Breaking All the Rules
"Little guy, do I have some news for you!" Abby boomed, sitting on the couch next to me. I closed the book I had been reading and looked at me. "I know you and my niece had a thing going on for a while and I know how you can meet up with her."
"Maybe I don't want to see her," I muttered and stood to go look out the window. The dark clouds cut loose the rain they had been holding and it was now pouring.
"What do you mean?" Abby asked, crossing the room to stand next to me. I turned to face her.
"What if me seeing her is the reason she's in danger? What if that's the reason someone wants to kill her?" I asked. She sighed and put her hand on my shoulder.
"I've been through a lot, Zach, but I know one thing because I'm a girl: I would love to have a boy who brought the danger to me. And, I'd love to have a boy who would take a bullet for me, like you would. But I don't, you should consider yourself lucky: Cammie would do that all for you and only ask for your love," she said. I sighed.
"I just can't, Abby. It's against the policy," I muttered and looked out the window. She made me face her.
"After what both of you have been through, you deserve to break the rules," she said.
"What about you? You're all about the rules and about keeping your priorities in mind. You always say not to let other things that aren't important get in the way of a job," I said, crossing my arms over my chest. She looked defeated.
"That's true, I did say that. But, that's how I live, Zach, you're young, you can break the rules and still slide by. When you get older is when you need to worry. You're young, make the most of it because life's too short," she said.
"Zach? Can I see you?" Jordan asked. I looked at Abby before stepping out in the hall with him. "You know you can't leave, right?"
"Yeah, I know, Jordan," I said. He nodded and looked down the empty hallway.
"I won't tell as long as you get back before anyone realizes your gone," he said in a low voice. I stared at him.
"Jordan South is telling me to break the rules?" I asked. He was one to never break rules. He was one of those freaks who obeyed them.
"Shut up, just go," he said and turned his back.
"What are you doing?" I asked. He shrugged.
"Not watching you leave, that way I don't technically lie," he said. I rolled my eyes and put my hood up.
"Thanks," I whispered and ran out into the rain.
