Chapter 1:

Huntsgirl stood in the Huntsman's quarters at 1:30 in the morning, awaiting an "Emergency" assignment.

She was hoping she hadn't been summoned just to help the Hunstmaster find his staff, which he kept misplacing.

Pacing in circles, impatiently, she was almost ready to leave and go back to bed. But finally, the Huntsman entered through the sliding metal door.

Trying her hardest not to show her impatience, Huntsgirl stood attentively.

"You requested an assignemt, Huntsmaster?"

"So I did," he replied shortly. Huntsgirl kept her face impassive, but inwardly squirmed with irritation. This was no emergency.

"I need you to retrieve an important um...artifact...for me. You'll find it under protection in the warehouse behind Central Park."

"And Master, you need me to retrieve this artifact tonight?" you asshole, she added silently.

"I can't think of a better time. Now go", he said.

"Wait! Master, how will I be able to identify this object?"

"Oh, you'll know it when you see it. It'll have an "X". Is that clear enough?" Not waiting for a reply, the Huntsman stormed out of the room.

Making her way to the other end of Central Park, she walked quickly, ignoring the catcalls of gangs chilling early that morning.

Just as the Huntsman had told her, she saw a run down warehouse, seemingly deserted.

Taking out her staff, in case she needed it to bust down the door, she gave a slight push and the door swung open. If this was a movie, it wasn't a good sign.

Walking into the dark warehouse, she searched for a light, but couldn't find one. It was too dark to see her hand in front of her face, but she couldn't use her huntstaff to light the way, as it would drain the power. And she had a growing suspicion she was going to need it.

A rustling sound came nearby. Holding her breath, she listened intently. Scuffling on the ground. It was too loud to be rats, therefore she was in for something big.

Something furry and sticky came flying at her, its teeth scraping her arm. Pulling out her staff, the glow illuminated the space. It was filled with hairy critters, each bigger than a large dog. Remembering what Jake had told her about the creatures planted by ex Principal Brock, these were probably the same thing.

Stunning the first few that came at her, she almost tripped over their bodies as she attempted to fight off the others surrounding her. There must have been almost a hundred in all. Felling wave after wave of the vicious critters, she made her way up the steps, blasting them down. Turning to run, she took off down the dark hall.

Lighting her staff for another quick look around ,she noticed another pair of footprints on the ground. A booted foot had walked this way. Following the footsteps, she came to a door.

This was it...on the count of three, she would blast down that door, and find whoever or whatever was inside.

One...

Two...

Three. The door swung open. Stepping inside, she saw someone sitting, facing the opposite direction.

"You, turn around," she ordered.

The figure turned, grinning. It was the Huntsman, a gigantic letter "X" painted in red on his bare, tan chest.

"Huntsmaster...I...I don't understand..."

"Don't play me the fool , Huntsgirl. We both know why I'm here."

Not entirely sure of herself, she shut the door behind her, knowing she had finally found what she was looking for.
