"How much longer will this keep getting stronger? I'm wondering what she's doing when I'm singing myself to sleep."

- Definitely Maybe, FM Static

The moonlight reflected brightly off the hood of the 86, the warm summer air calming the nerves he couldn't subdue on his own.

That car was the only thing he had to care about; aside from Itsuki, Iketani, Kenji…but Takumi was quite sure he was straight, so feeling something so intimate for them was not even a close possibility…

It had been too long since he had last seen her. Loving a car was different than loving another human being; the car could love you back by running efficiently, purring when you hit the accelerator, and getting you where you needed to be, but another person…

A person could hold you, tell you they cared about you, and make you realize that there were quite a few things worth living for in this world.

His fingers grazed the hood of the 86, wincing as he felt how cold it was.

People were warm, with blood pulsating through them and air in their lungs. Cars bled oil and exhaled exhaust.

Takumi loved them both, but one could never compare to the other. In truth, he was sure he couldn't do without either, though he had been living without one for almost two years now.

No other girl could ever be her.

He couldn't help but wonder if that man had met her in Tokyo. If he had money to drive a car like that and buy her all her heart's desires, it sure as hell wouldn't cost a thing to drive out there every day of the week.

By now, Natsuki had probably forgotten him. It hadn't taken anything for her to deny him the knowledge that she was seeing another man, so how hard could it be to go away to a new city - probably teeming with new guys - and forget the one you left at home?

Takumi sighed and eyed his car in disdain.

A girl could leave you without a second thought, but a car would stay until it could no longer run.

Before heading inside, he took one last look at the 86.

Right now, she was the only girl for him.

"Cuz he's a faker, so see ya later. I wonder when you'll realize she means a lot more to me."
