Squall Leonheart leaned against the railing of the second floor balcony with a glazed look in his eyes that clearly said he was thinking. It had been a while since the teenage commander had been able to just sit and think, he wouldn't just get a few quick thoughts in before another big battle, the night was his.
"You okay." Squall turned slowly to see who was responsible for ruining his solitude, 'Please let it be someone I can ignore.'
Rinoa Heartilly stared at him with questioning eyes and genuine concern.
"Squall?" She extended a hand but let it drop before getting halfway up, "You've been really quite lately. I know you're always quite but this is different. If something's wrong, you know I'm here, right?" The dark haired SeeD nodded half-heartedly. Rinoa just sighed and sat down with her back against the balcony wall.
"You don't have to tell me but," She hung her head, "can I please stay anyway?" Squall blinked in surprise. "I just don't want to stay in the garden alone. To you this place is home, but it's still strange to me. I want a friend by my side." They were both silent for a moment.
"What do you mean by friend?" Squall inquired. Rinoa looked up past her raven colored locks.
"We're friends, aren't we? I figured I meant that much to you, at least. Am I wrong?" She tried but couldn't keep the hurt from seeping into her tone.
"No, guess not." Squall answered blandly, "But how can you tell who your friends are so easily? Who do you call a friend?"
"I." Rinoa considered his question, "My friends are the people I can trust. The ones that mean more to me than anything, that are always on my side. They lift me up when I'm down and give me a shoulder to lean on. Those people are my friends."
"What about the ones who aren't on your side? The ones that you have to fight, even if it kills you inside to do so. Are they your friends?" Squall's question surprised the girl.
"You mean Seifer and his gang don't you?" Rinoa asked softly, "Yeah, I guess they would be my friends too."
"But how can you tell when the circumstances are always changing?" The SeeD asked. Looking out onto the endless expanse of waves.
"You can't," Rinoa answered simply, "But your heart can."
"Do you trust your heart?" Squall inquired, keeping his barrage of questions going.
"Yeah," She answered, "but I trust yours even more."
"Why?" He turn to face Rinoa, who was standing beside him.
"Because," She reached out until her palm rested on his chest, "You have the heart of a lion."
