"Shove over," a voice pleaded.
I opened my eyes groggily. Sadie was twisting her hands, looking nervous and anxious as she stood at the side of my bed.
"'s wrong?" I asked, pulling myself up. In the back of my mind, Anubis shifted and grumbled, unable to fully wake up.
Sadie was obviously wound up about something. Her eyes were dilated in a panic and her small hands were shaking. She didn't seem to be in a state to talk either, which was probably the scariest thing of all.
"Alright, hey, c'mere," I said soothingly, motioning her closer. She stumbled a little, so upset she wasn't paying attention. I leaned down and put my hands on her waist, lifting her up onto my bed. I wrestled the covers from around me and offered her a spot. She didn't hesitate to curl up next to me and yank the covers out of my hand, bundling herself up.
Well, at least she's not cold, I thought. I had expected her to be freezing to the touch after having walked all the way to my room, but her skin was surprisingly warm. Not fevered, just warm.
"So what had you upset?" I asked, looking down.
She was already asleep.
I sighed, "I guess I can wait until the morning." I wrapped my arm around her and closed my eyes.
Let me tell you, sleeping with Sadie is not as fun as it sounds. I woke up every half hour and had to yank my covers back because she kept stealing them. She squirmed a lot and knocked me in the chin constantly. And, to top it all off, her pleasant warmth quickly turned into sleeping with a space heater. I was covered in sweat and had to go and sit across the room to be cooled off by the winter wind on the balcony.
Needless to say, I was ready to toss her in my floor around four in the morning. However, upon turning on my light, she looked quite very adorable and innocent, curled into my chest and clutching my shirt. I guess I'm too much of a softie to push such a cute cover hog into the floor. So, instead, I let her have all the cover and I curled around her, absorbing her warmth and pinning her to my side so she couldn't squirm anymore. She was a lot more still when I was practically holding her down.
By morning, I was less than well-rested, however, Sadie yawned and stretched and snuggled into me when she woke, smiling so happily at me. I forgot how awful I had slept and how annoying she'd been around one in the morning. I just remembered her in a panic last night and how happy she looked now.
Sadie's adorable in the morning, Anubis said, greeting me sleepily.
Yeah, so adorable, especially when she's kicking me out of my own bed, I said sarcastically.
"Morning love," Sadie purred.
I wanted to throttle her for keeping me up so long, but instead I pet her hair and put my chin on her head.
"You squirm a lot, did you know that?" I said.
She blushed and nuzzled my chest. "'m sorry."
"You're lucky you're cute."
She blushed I felt my aggravation ebb away. I sighed, holding her tighter, "What had you so upset last night?"
She cringed and buried her face in my chest. "The desert," she whispered. Her shoulders trembled softly.
Walt, you idiot! Anubis exclaimed. Don't make her cry again! What's wrong with you?!
I almost told him to go jump in a sarcophagus. He was way to touché about Sadie crying. I didn't like it either, but I didn't almost have an anxiety attack when it happened.
"Hush, there, there," I soothed, petting her hair. "Sadie, I'm not going anywhere."
She choked and nodded, still looking shaken. "I know that."
"Then why do you always panic?" I inquired, teasing and gentle.
She gave me a weak punch in the shoulder and didn't answer. Instead, she took the covers back off my and squirmed down, disappearing under my comforter.
"Sadie! You can't go back to sleep!"
"Too bad," she said, her voice muffled.
I sighed in frustration and flopped back on my back. "Sadie?"
"Mm?"
"You are really luck you're cute," I grumbled.
