Halloween is a day of candy and children and pumpkins. It is a day of goblins and witches and butterflies and dinosaurs. It is a day of chocolate and peanut-butter-cups and jelly beans.
It is also a day of parties and scary movies and costumes-that-would-normally-not-be-worn-under-any-circumstances.
(Because you know, once you've moved passed the simple stage of being Alice in Wonderland or an eerie glow-in-the-dark skeleton, Halloween costumes hold multiple meanings.)
"The blue ones are my favorite," she tells him that night as they are getting ready to go out. The streets are dark and lights have been flickering on in front porches for the last hour.
The bag crinkles as she digs her hand in, searching until she pulls out a handful of M&M's. Orange, brown, and blue. She pops the blue ones in her mouth and holds the rest out to him. "Want some?"
"No." He watches her, and thinks about pointing out that all M&M's taste the same.
"I don't think I've ever seen you eat chocolate." She tosses the rest of the candy into her mouth. "And I've known you for what – a lifetime?"
It's true. Even before they were put on the same team, they've always known each other. His silver gaze has always seen her, and she has always known the talent of the white-eyed genius, even on the playground when they were six and throwing stones at brick walls instead of kunai at targets.
"Do you ever eat candy?"
Her eyes meet his, clear and amber, framed by long, dark lashes. Large golden hoops dangling from her ears glint in the light. His eyes trace the curve of her waist, the gold-buckled belt slung low on her hips, the sparkle of long beaded necklaces looped around her neck, the short black skirt and heeled leather boots that reveal long, sculpted legs. An eye patch is pushed up onto her forehead and a red bandana covers the curtain of dark hair cascading down her shoulders.
"No," he says.
She moves toward him, her movements long and graceful. His breath hitches just a little as her hand reaches out, fingers brushing his chest. "Really?" she says.
He starts breathing again. "Really," he finds himself saying.
She steps closer, fingers dancing over his shoulders, down his back, tracing the firm muscles of his upper body. "Would you eat some?" she says softly. A smile twitches at her mouth. "For me?"
When he reaches for her, and she pushes an M&M into his mouth. The chocolate melts sweetly in his mouth.
"Good?" she asks.
He swallows, his arms closing around her waist and pulling her towards him. Her eyes widen slightly as he slides his hands slowly along her hips.
"Only when you give it to me," he says.
Their mouths meet softly, hungrily. A moment later, the doorbell rings. He ignores it, moving closer and tightening his hold on her, his body moving against hers.
At last she breaks away, her eyes bright and cheeks flushed. "Doorbell," she says.
He watches her cross the room, picking up a glass bowl of candy on the way. "Damn trick-or-treaters," he says huskily.
She laughs.
Halloween is a day of candy and children and pumpkins. It is a day of goblins and witches and butterflies and dinosaurs. It's a day of pirates.
It is also a day of parties and scary movies and costumes-that-would-normally-not-be-worn-under-any-circumstances. And along with that comes behaviors-that-would-normally-not-be-displayed-under-any-circumstances.
(Because you know, even emotionless fate-bound Hyuugas have to fall for someone.)
