He watched his master.
The swish of his indigo cloak. The click-clack of his red sandals. The silky touch to his lavender hair. The perfect color of his pale, slender body, wrapped in a purple tunic. The beautiful ruby set in his gold brimmed hat. Everything Shadow saw... Flawless.
Everything he saw...
"Master..." Shadow was stretched on his stomach on the bed, head propped up on his hands, legs moving back and forth in the air. "Whatcha doin'?"
"What?" Vaati stopped pacing. "Oh... um... just thinking..." He ran his fingers through his bangs and plopped down beside his servant.
"Hey, Vaati... why do you always hide your right eye?"
"...secret," Vaati replied quietly.
"Aww, come on," Shadow pressed. Does master have a flaw? Naw, I'm just imagining things. "What's so secret you can't tell your creation? You know I can't and won't betray you. I'll keep your secret. I have to."
"I know... it's just..."
"And when you hit your eye on accident that one time, you cried blood. Though your showing eye is just fine, with normal tears and everything..."
"I don't want to talk about it," Vaati said firmly.
"But-" Shadow sat up.
"No! Stop asking!"
An awkward silence fell over the two. Shadow looked at his hands. Vaati left the room. Shadow rubbed his face.
Great. I upset him...
Shadow hated it when Vaati was unhappy.
He traveled through the shadows to Vaati's room. The Wind Mage was lying face-down on his bed with his head in his pillow. Shadow walked near him.
"Go away."
"Master, I-"
"No, Shadow. I don't want to hear it." Vaati sat up. "Just leave. I want to be alone."
Shadow laced his fingers together. "Can you at least tell me who or what caused whatever it is?"
Vaati was silent for a long time. Shadow was certain he wouldn't respond when-
"Ganon."
Shadow gasped. "No!"
Vaati nodded slowly. "Yes."
"Why?!"
"I wasn't providing sufficient work, I suppose."
"You suppose?! He'd better be glad the four Links killed him or he'd have me to deal with!"
"No," Vaati said calmly. "He could destroy you without even touching you. You think any other being could cause me harm?"
"...no," Shadow replied finally. "But that bastard-!"
"I know, Shadow."
A silence settled over the two, but not quite like before. Shadow sat next to Vaati. "I want to see it."
"What?"
"I want to see what he did to you."
He blinked. Shadow reached forward and lifted the bangs off the mage's eye.
The one flaw on my beautiful master...
Shadow let Vaati's bangs drop back down.
