Now that I've worked out an h/c drabble, I thought I'd have a go. This is in response to the June 2005 drabble challenge at Lancer Writers and is 300 words including the title, but not including this preamble! The challenge? Have someone else say a line other than the original character.

THE FALL.

The dark head was swathed in white and resting on a soft pillow, the normally tanned face pale and still. Ridiculously long lashes rested on high cheekbones and refused to flutter.

Sam straightened from checking Johnny and sighed.

"It was a bad fall. I've done what I can, splinted broken bones, but the rest is up to him."

Scott moved to the bedside and perched one hip tentatively on the mattress, almost as if he was afraid to disturb the unconscious man.

"But it's already been several hours, Sam. How long can he safely remain unconscious before it becomes dangerous?" The worry was etched onto his face and softened his voice.

"Patients in an unconscious state are an unknown quantity, Scott. He could waken later today, tomorrow, next week or never." The doctor held up his hand to forestall the objections he saw coming. "Now I know you're all going to say that Johnny will pull through, and given his track record of surviving almost insurmountable odds, I wouldn't bet against him, so why don't we give him a chance?" He turned to the Lancer patriarch. "I'd like to freshen up, with your permission."

"Of course, Sam, forgive my manners. Stay the night, please, it's too late to be going anywhere, and it would be of comfort to have you here if…"

A soft moan from the boy on the bed brought all heads swinging back in his direction. Deep sapphire blue eyes opened, dulled in pain and confusion, but as he blinked he brought into focus his family and Doc Jenkins.

Murdoch reached across and gently squeezed his son's hand.

"We'd just about given up on you, boy."

With a smile, knowing the words to be false, Johnny allowed healing sleep to once again steal him away.

A/N: the line in bold type was originally delivered by Scott to his brother in the pilot episode of the series.
