"Boys, we need to talk," I called. "Please turn off the game."
"Just a sec.," Emmett complained, "I'm gonna level up soon…" Edward rolled his eyes at Emmett and reached over to shut off the tv.
"Thank you." I said, smiling. "Your mother and I have been talking, and to be honest, this is getting a little ridiculous. You have all graduated high school, and all you do now is sit around and play games. As of now you have two choices. Number one, you may go to college. Your mother and I will pay for it, provided you get good grades. Number two, you may remain living at home, but you will have to go get a job."
Emmett was the first to speak. "Wait, so you mean that I have to either go get a job or get good grades in college? I sucked at high school, how am I gonna do better in college?"
"I understand that school is more difficult for you than for the others Emmett. However, I do believe that if you applied yourself to your schoolwork, you could maintain a B average without too much work."
"So, have you picked out the college we are going to as well?" Jasper asked angrily.
"Of course not. That is a decision you must make for yourself." I expected the boys to question me, but I hadn't realized quite how hard this would be. Esme and I talked about it for hours, and finally came to the conclusion that nothing was going to change without us acting on it. We also decided that I got to be the one to tell the boys, she was afraid she would back out.
"Dad, I'm only seventeen. I cannot move out!" Edward complained, "Besides, Emmett is twenty-one. How come I have to leave when I am so much younger?"
I knew Edward would have a hard time dealing with this. He was the first child I took in, and was the closest to me. "Edward, you are very capable for a seventeen year old. As you are seventeen, if you wish to stay home and not work, I will allow it. I want to warn you though, that you will have to go back to high school."
"No way!" Edward yelled. "I wouldn't go back to high school for anything, it sucked! And my teachers were bitchy."
"Edward, please watch your language. I will give you one week during which you may decide what choice you want to make. At the end of that week, I will expect you to either be applying for a job or applying to a university."
"So, what if I don't get a job, and don't want to go to college?" Emmett challenged, "You gonna just kick me out?"
"If that is what it comes to, then yes. Your mother and I love you, and we want you to be able to survive on your own. Remember what I said, one week."
