One day, Natsume asked Mikan's parents if he could marry Mikan. Of course, Izumi, being an overprotective father, wanted to make sure that Natsume truly loved Mikan. So he decided to talk to Natsume.
"Natsume, before I let you marry my daughter I would like to ask you two questions" said Izumi
"What is it sir?" asked Natsume
"Do you promise not to make my daughter cry?" asked Izumi
"I promise" answered Natsume
"Good. Do you promise to protect her and die for her?" asked Izumi
"I promise to protect her but I will not die for her." Natsume calmly replied
"What? Why would you not die for her?" Izumi asked feeling a bit angry.
"Because if I died for her she would blame herself and cry and if she cries I would break my promise as to not make her cry." Natsume explained
After hearing his explanation, Izumi smiled and said
"That was a very excellent answer. I now approve of you marrying my daughter"
