I've seen so many versions of this story and absolutely none of them have been completed, so I took it upon myself to write and complete my own version. Don't forget to tell me what you think!
Disclaimer: I do not own Fruits Basket or Ouran High Host Club.
Note: This is based off of the anime. Akito's gender is male to fit the storyline better.
A small young girl sat in the shadows of a darkened room. She was curled in a little ball, wishing he would leave her be. Though she knew he wouldn't, not until he punished her for disobeying him.
Though he was not much larger his figure seemed to loom over her. A reminder as to who held the power. There was no escape, it was suffocating to be alone with him. With every step he took, she braced herself and curled up tighter wishing her brother would save her. It was foolish to think that would happen. He was at school today.
"Haruhi, Haruhi, Haruhi," he began with a sadistic smirk "What am I going to do with you?"
"Please just leave!" she begged holding tears. "Just go away!"
The boy, Akito, simply ignored her pleas."I told you to stay away from those people. I told you they wouldn't understand you, but you disobeyed me. Look at the mess you have created for yourself. Tell me Haruhi was it really worth it?" he sneered at her.
"No." Her breathing was shallow and she couldn't hold back her tears any longer. "I'm sorry for disobeying you." Her voice was soft despite her fear, her tone was submissive and she lowered her gaze to the worn wooden floor beneath her. Forgotten animal or not, Akito was still her 'god' she had been wrong to be disobedient.
"Good, at least you are realising the extent of your mistake. You see Haruhi, I'm going to tell you something about normal people. They all seem nice at first and you think-," he paused to smirk at her pained response "You believe that they want to be your friend, but when they find out that you are different they change. That is when you realise that they will never accept you." Haruhi cried harder, she wanted to be accepted. Like any child she wanted a friend, sometimes she yearned for a whole group of them. A few days ago she had thought that her wish came true, but Akito was right. They did change, they changed because she had transformed.
"When they discover that you are an animal they will never look at you the same. No matter how close you were or how many happy memories you made. You are disgusting to them," he spat "A monster!" She covered her ears with her dainty hands and shook her head, a feeble attempt to block him out. "You are an outsider and nothing more." His words echoed in her brain, nagging at her and refusing to leave her alone.
"That is not true!" Haruhi sniffed. There had to be kind people out there. "Oh really?" he was closer to her now, crouching over her. She could feel the warmth of his breath as he leaned in closer. "So tell me Haruhi, where are your parents then?" His question caught her by surprise, her watery brown eyes widened. Akito took a step back and for a split second she thought he was finished. Instead, he took his hand and slapped her across the face. The sound echoed in the room.
"That is why we stay at Sohma House, where they are the outsiders. Of course you're not quite one of us either. You and Kyo both." The boy drew in a breath and straightened his posture. "Regardless, never disobey me again Haruhi."
The small girl closed her eyes tight and when she opened them, she found herself in Ouran's Music Room. She was fifteen years old now. A chill prickled her skin drawing her attention to her naked body. Quickly, she grabbed her blue blazer from the floor and pulled it around her. When she lifted her head, the members of the Host Club towered over her, taking the place of her cousin. Once again she could feel the air around her growing thin.
"Haru- Haruhi?" Tamaki stuttered her name. Unable to read the tone of his voice, Haruhi shyly forced herself to make eye contact with him. "What are you?" he whispered in astonishment. "She is disgusting that's what she is," Kyoya interrupted, looking at her as one would look at a rabid creature.
"She is a monster!" Honey shouted clutching Usa-chan to his chest and backing himself behind Mori's leg, who in turn looked at her in disgust. "Hey Kaoru! Get your camera," Hikaru laughed cruelly. "Why?" Kaoru asked with a smile that matched his brothers. "So we can put up a lost poster and see if we can find her owners. That is if she even has any, she's probably wild."
Once again tears streamed down her face as she helplessly listened to their insults. "Hikaru! Stop that, we shouldn't go to all that trouble. Let's just bring her to the pound!" Kaoru joked. "Now, now gentlemen," Tamaki began "People like us should not touch creatures like that, who knows what kind of diseases it carries."
The air grew steadily thinner, the whole room seemed to spin and their words echoed in her head. She began to feel drowsy and slowly her surroundings faded out to black.
Haruhi's eyes opened wide as she woke with a start. Tear were steadily streaming down her face much like in her dream. "Haruhi? Sweetheart are you alright?" Ranka questioned, running into her room. He embraced her as much as he possibly could, "I heard you screaming." Haruhi felt guilty for waking him and wiped the tears away from her face. "I'm fine. It was just a bad dream," she explained. "The same one again?" he asked attentively, while brushing a strand of hair away from her face. She could only nod in response. "Honey, you know those boys wouldn't do that to you if they knew, they're your friends," he consoled her softly. "They'll accept you just like I do."
Haruhi brushed him off gently. "It is fine, really, I'm just going to get ready for school." Ranka was not convinced, but even so he left Haruhi to give her privacy. He swore to do whatever he could to make sure she was happy. After all he wasn't her father, but he was just as good as being the real thing.
When Ranka was in high school, he was best friends with three of the Sohmas; Hatori, Shigure and Ayame. At first he had assumed that they were normal students, who perhaps received a little extra romantic attention than normal. However, he was proven wrong when Ayame caught a cold while spending the night and transformed in front of him.
Needless to say it took them all night to calm him down. In Ranka's defence it isn't often you find out your best friends are cursed. While initially he was freaked out, he was touched by their concern for him. He remembered that weary look in their eye and he couldn't help but stand by them. Fortunately for Ranka the boys begged for his memory to stay intact and he was sworn to secrecy by the then head of Sohma House, Akito's mother. He later found out he was used as blackmail.
Haruhi was only small back then. The teenagers dragged her with them almost everywhere they went. Shigure absolutely doted on her, as did Ayame and Ranka. Hatori made sure they were responsible while watching her, but Ayame claimed he too had a soft spot for Haruhi. Eventually when they had gotten older a small rift formed between the four of them, Ayame opened up his business, Shigure left the main house taking his sister with him, Hatori stayed behind serving as the Sohma family doctor and Ranka himself moved to another part of Japan close by.
At the end of Middle School, Haruhi decided that she wanted attend the prestigious Ouran Academy. When she learned of her acceptance she was overjoyed and they couldn't have been more proud of her. The idea of having her pay for boarding closer to Ouran was preposterous, so Ranka eagerly offered his door to her. He chuckled remembering Shigure's reaction to her leaving. He couldn't decide whether to be happy or depressed.
"Have you seen the hairbrush?" Haruhi questioned from her room, abruptly pulling him from his reverie. "No, I don't remember seeing it," he replied sauntering to the stove. Silence engulfed the home, the only noise being the tell-tale sounds of her search before she piped up again. "Never mind, I found it." Another peaceful few minutes passed and a warm cup of tea was made before she appeared again. "Well I'm off to school, if you get hungry there's food prepared in the fridge," she instructed giving him a small kiss on the cheek. Ranka hummed in amusement, "You're too good to me, Haruhi. Have a good day today, wont you?"
"I will, and you do too!" She replied giving him a small wave. The door closed behind her and Ranka immediately reached for the phone. "Let's see now…" It rang three times before there was an answer.
"Hello?" A voice sang at the other end of the line.
"Hello, Shigure," Ranka replied with a small smile. Shigure was someone you either held a strong dislike for or loved dearly, actually perhaps it was more of a Sohma trait now that he thought about it.
"Ah Ranka! To what do I owe the pleasure of this-" Shigure was unceremoniously cut off mid dramatic rant.
"I'm calling about Haruhi, I think we should make a few much needed changes to this arrangement. She needs you too right now."
