When she is safely squeezed into one of the closets of the bedroom upstairs, the overhead bulb bringing light and heat, Maggie holds the letter and thinks.
It is from Faye, of course; no one else would ever send her mail. She recognises Faye's mother's handwriting on the envelope, which is crumpled and a bit dirty. Maggie almost cannot fathom why the postal service did not take the utmost care with this letter; its fragility and purity and innocence shines on strongly to her. Did it not shine for them as well?
She has not seen Faye in such a long time, and she almost forgets what she looks like, but she remembers the important things. She remembers her tiny, yet firm voice; a voice that touched Maggie in warm places inside. She remembers her little paper planes, with dreams and aspirations to really fly. She remembers the way those glassy eyes bore right through her. She remembers the way her hand trembled when she tried to kiss her.
Maggie blushes deeply. Faye was a forward girl.
This letter is the first, and it is proof. That they are still out there. That the treatment is going well. That Faye might get better soon. That she will one day return.
Maggie holds the letter tightly in her hand. She does not open it for a long time.
