My entry for the Parent/Child competition (.net/topic/44309/53407243/1/)
Disclaimer: I own nothing except for the plot!
There were Nargles everywhere. They were in the mistletoe that Luna had tied over the door, they were in the Christmas tree that still stood in the living room although it was already January and they were hiding in the kitchen cupboard which was filled with tins of baby food in all colours, shapes and flavours. Today Luna didn't care. She was sitting on the baby-blue sofa, her 8 month old son Lorcan on her lap. His twin brother, Lysander was sleeping in his purple baby bed. Luna had insisted in buying baby-blue and purple furniture because these colours represented cosiness and Rolf Scarmander had known better than to argue with his wife. Outside it was getting dark but Luna was waiting patiently for her husband's return. He had been travelling France for 2 weeks in the hope of finding proof for the existence of the Pink Polkiadoo and today he would return. Luna was excited to hear about his discovery- in one of his owls he had described seeing a purple Pink Polkiadoo as well as a green one. Lorcan was wearing his purple baby grow which was decorated with the rest of his dinner, babbling about 'mama' and 'dada'. He had started to talk early but Lysander, on the other hand, had remained silent.
'He will talk when the time has come.' Luna told everyone who asked her about it.
Luna liked being a mother. She liked her husband and she liked her sons. Although they were identical twins their personalities were very different; Lysander was rather calm and didn't cry a lot whereas Lorcan, on the other hand, was very playful and would get bored easily. Luna loved them as much as you can love someone. Their hair was blond like hers and their eyes were of the deepest blue. Only their nose looked like their father's, finer and smaller than their mother's.
The magic clock in the kitchen played 'River flows in you'. That meant it was 9 o'clock. Luna loved that piece and so did Lorcan. She started to hum quietly, to herself and Lorcan. 'Nanananananana...' She looked down at her son, smiling dreamily. He squealed in delight.
'Nana!'
'Is it nice? Do you like the song?' Luna asked her son. Lorcan shook his head.
'Nana!' he pointed to the Mistletoe toe.
'Yes, that's a mistletoe.' Luna responded, still smiling.
'No! Nana!' Lorcan said, shaking his head wildly. 'Nana. Nana bad.' Luna tilted her head.
'Oh, you mean the Nargles? Yes, they are bad.' she said with a dreamy expression on her face. 'A good friend of mine once kissed a girl under a mistletoe infected with Nargles but he broke up with her...' Her voice trailed off and she yawned as she remembered these times.
When she fell asleep on the sofa that night with Lorcan cuddled up in her arms she only thought one thing: How excited would Rolf be when he found out that Lorcan could see the Nargles, too.
This story was rather hard to write as it was difficult for me to imagine Luna being a mother (especially when you consider the things you have to do to become a mother) but I think that I managed quite well. Please leave me a review and tell me what you think!
The piano-piece 'River flows in you' actually exists and is from the Korean pianist Yiruma. Check it out!
