"Sprout and the Bean"

The streets of Mintaka and the royal palace were built out of brass, undisturbed by the shifting dirt beneath them. Moles suffocated under the hot metal, and the slightest earthquake passed beneath it with hardly a tremor. It was stable, compact, and unshakeable by the forces of nature.

But there were other places; the soft dust and mud of Azha, the quick sands of the desert. Now that the Earth had been restored, a shockwave could travel from continent to continent, tearing up the trees of Anuenue and swallowing the villagers whole. It never lost momentum; just kept moving like a thing that was both dead and alive.

Only the dead villagers saw the face in the dirt before it ate them.

Earthquakes were new phenomenon to the People of the Skies.
