What If?

What if, that one day she had finally plucked up all the courage to ask him out, he hadn't interfered by roughly grasping her wrist and pulling her into his cubicle to stare at her with sincere charcoal eyes and ask her out himself? Would she have been bluntly rejected by the other attractive blond haired man and forced to fake sick for several days so that she wouldn't have to face the shame of seeing his smiling face directed at his own far more beautiful unrequited crush?

What if she hadn't stammered out a refusal to the intensely beautiful man because she was still too in love with her own silly crush and because she felt he was mocking her? Would she have gone out with him until he got bored of her and pushed her out of his life, just as so many had done before?

What if it turned out that the next day he hadn't transferred to a different branch half way across the world? Would she have the next morning immediately run into his dark, corner office and agreed to go out with because she realised, deep down, that the reason she had rejected him was not because she wasn't interested in him--quite the opposite--but because she was afraid he would break what little was left of her, afraid he would not accept already damaged goods?

What if she hadn't spent the next few years clinging onto her remorse, wishing she could go back in time and jovially agree to his proposal like any other normal girl would've done? Would she have already found a man even kinder, even more--though she knew this part was impossible--beautiful to marry and have a child with?

What if after that seemingly endless day at the office she had not gone home to ready some stuff up only to open the door that had surprisingly rung (her visitors were limited to only the mailman) to reveal an unexpected guest? Would she have given an embarrassed grin about the mess and invited them in instead of staring wide eyed and open jawed at the soaking man standing on her porch in the rain?

What if he hadn't suddenly took her into his arms and pressed his wet mouth to hers and muttered unneeded and unnecessary apologies to her between ravaging kisses? Would she have immediately slammed the door on him and convinced herself it was some sort of prank instead of leaning into his kisses and forcing his head closer to hers by threading her fingers through his messy raven hair?

What if…he hadn't asked her to marry him?
