A girl around fourteen wandered in the streets, touching the walls as if looking for something. A clatter in front of her startled her and made her head shoot up. A trash can had fallen over due to rats and other vermin. Of course, most people would have considered her as one likewise. The black mop that covered her head was filthy and greasy. Scratches and dirt clung to her skin, and her clothes that should've been white were now a repulsive brown color. The girl hadn't been in an adventure gone wrong, but maybe it was more of a gift gone wrong. Not exactly a gift. It was more of a weakness.
The grimy child stumbled into the open streets where the light shone brighter than in an alley. Child felt the streets shake as a loud sound passed by. It sounded like a dead weight was being pushed on the ground. Then, as if the rumbling wasn't good enough, a force pushed her to the ground. She was slammed onto the sidewalk, little bits of rocks and pebbles digging into her skin.
"Hey, come back with that!" an angry voice shouted.
The girl lifted her head and felt the air brush against her skin. Somebody had just jumped over her.
"Brother, wait for me!" a younger and more innocent voice cried.
Metal clacked by and the girl weakly picked herself up. Whoever passed by her was probably in a hurry. Even though she didn't see where they went, she followed the air that was brushed with a faint scent. It was the scent of the strangers, she knew it.
"Give me back those coins!" the first voice shouted and rumbling was felt again.
Gasping was heard along with the jingle of coins.
"Come on Al, we have to get back to Headquarters or Mustang will have our heads for sure." The first voice laughed.
Clanking was heard again along with heavy footsteps. The girl wandered from the wall and into the open. Now there was no guide to help her in the big world. She was lost without it, but fear did not strike her heart. There was only curiosity. The girl was drawn to the first two voices and she wandered in their direction. A gasp escaped her lips when she hit a hard and warm wall.
"What-?" the first voice gasped.
"Uh, excuse me, can we help you?" the second voice asked with a strange feeling emanating from his voice.
A fragile hand wandered up the wall and onto a thin pole where a pulse was. It wandered higher to an opened cave.
"What are you doing?" the voice asked strongly as a hand grabbed hers.
The raven girl ignored him and reached to his side where a cold wall touched her hand instead. A shock breath escaped from her mouth. She had expected a warm wall like the original one, but it surprisingly wasn't.
"Brother, don't you think that she's…blind?" the second voice suggested.
Before the first voice answer, the girl shot up her free hand at his head. The boy's eyes widened and all color drained from his face. All emotions left his eyes, and for a moment, it seemed as if he was dead.
"Brother!"
"Come on Al, hurry up!" a young blonde laughed as another boy followed behind.
"No, Al, I'm going to marry Winry when we're older!"
"No way, I am!" the same brown haired boy retorted.
"Ed, Al, dinner!" a brown-haired woman shouted warmly. Her eyes were so loving and her smile so joyous.
"Winry, what do you want to be when you grow up?" the happy young Ed cried as he faced a blonde child.
"I want to be a mechanist." came the answer.
Laughter soon turned to fright at a collapsed woman. It was the same woman who called them to dinner.
"Mother!"
"No, Al, come back!"
Tears fell as the brother fell through light. A look of fright was in his eyes.
A gate loomed in front with thousands of greedy eyes. Tiny hands grabbed for the person that only stood shocked. Time pieces and math flew by with such a speed.
Flashes of light and tears and blood stuck on cold metal.
Fire dancing and burnt wood stood before the sky. Thousands of stars twinkled in the sky as if mocking the sadness and pain.
So many cries of pain and metal.
"Auto-mail arm and leg…what could they have done?"
The cries of a baby and a look of love from mother to child.
"You pass... State Alchemist."
Weakly, the girl's hand flew back from the Ed's forehead. She quickly lost her balance and fell back. The sound of something falling reached her ears and metal from the armor was heard as well.
"Brother, are you okay? Brother, wake up!" the second voice, which probably belonged to Al shouted.
"A-Al…Al…Al…" Ed's voice cried weakly.
"You, what did you do to him!" Al shouted at the girl.
She panted with fear. What she saw and heard was more terrifying than any mind she had ever seen. So much pain and sorrow was filled in his life. Just thinking about made water fall onto her face.
Her hands touched her face and her palm faced the sky. Was it raining? Her face was wet, and yet, the sky was dry. No water fell and there wasn't the sound quietly touching the ground.
"Rain…"
