Once upon a time, humans lived on Earth. In the year 2103 after a successful colonization on Mars of three generations, Terrans expanded their technology and space exploration. During the third space exploration they discovered SEELE, a powerful technology that belonged to a different species that went extinct. Through this, the first interplanetary war of humans occurred. So were wrapped up humans in vying for the technology that they awoke the long lost race. This led to the destruction of a planet and the revival of Angels.

Angels, powerful martians that could wield the abilities of SEELE with near ease. Powers that borderlined that of a God's in the humans' eyes. To combat this, some interplanetary nations began forming secret organizations to combat the Angels. For the Angels were a bloodthirsty race that wanted to universe to bow to them. It wasn't until the age of 2425 that a nation that had remained neutral during the interplanetary war, discovered a way to combat Angels. By this time many lives were lost and what was once a thriving species spread far and wide across the galaxy is now confined back to their Solar System.

The nation that had discovered this technology was called NERV. In fear of another interplanetary war the technology was hidden away from prying eyes whilst still being developed in confidential. The secret remained buried for quite some time until a power hungry nation started a war that caused a series of circumstance that led high school students to discover the giant bio tech weapon known as EVA. From that second war, NERV became a great expanding empire that stood on equal ground to the Angels and the pilots of EVA rose above that of humanity.

This led to NERV conquering and subjugating all of humanity to rise together in defeating the Angels. Whilst there are those who would be happy to see NERV fall from their pedestal and burn to the ground. EVA pilots were the only things standing in the way of humanity's destruction. In some cultures if Angels were harbingers of death to punish the sins of the wars then EVA must truly be the salvation of humankind.

However, this story is not about the war between SEELE and NERV. It is not even about the extinction humanity. It is a story of a boy. The boy so filled with sadness and darkness, ever trying to crawl out of the pit he dug himself into. It is the story of a boy who was dragged into circumstances he never would have expected or wanted to be part of.
