"Steve," I said, forcing a wicked smile. "You were right. I did plot with Mr Crepsley to take your place as his assistant. We made a mug of you, and I'm glad. You're a nobody. A nothing. This is what you deserve. If Mr Crepsley was alive, he'd be laughing at you now, just like the rest of us are."
Steve's eyes refilled with hatred. The human within him vanished in an instant and he was Steve Leopard, vampire killer, again.
With his remaining strength rapidly flowing out of him, Steve made a vicious swipe at my unguarded stomach. I sat there, blood flowing from my previous wounds with a vague smile on my face. If Steve killed me in his dying moments then there would be no one left who could take on the role of the Lord of the Shadows; the world would survive.
"Don't!" yelled Mr Tiny, suddenly realizing what was about to happen. In horror he lunged for us where we lay, collapsed by the side of the river, but Evanna intervened to stop him.
It was too late anyway, or so I thought, in a few minutes both Steve and me would be dead and lying at the bottom of the river. This, however, turned out to be wishful thinking.
I'd left it too late. Steve had choked on his own blood surging through his mouth and his stab had flown wide. I watched him in rising terror, looking on as my last hope of salvation slipped through my fingers.
"No!" I screamed, clawing at Steve's chest where my own knife had buried itself just minutes before. He couldn't have died, he just couldn't have. He was still warm, the crimson fluid gushing over my hands told me so, he must be alive, he must!
A low rumbling sound filled the air, steadily gaining in volume. Mr Tiny was laughing at me, a gleeful smile plastered all over his pudgy face that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"You really think you can escape destiny Darren?"
