Yep, I'm recreating season 0, again, and it's going to be much closer to the original manga and better then my first attempt! I shall be using English names however because I've become used to them. Here we have the first chapter, Puzzle of the Gods! And the one's after this will probably shorter for a while! So, enjoy!

Duel 1: Puzzle of the Gods

There's a history of games. Game history is interwoven with human history, starting in the Egyptian empire 5,000 years ago. Ancient games foretold the future for citizens and kings. As games were played, fate was decided in magical ceremonies. These were called "The Shadow Games."

The students of Domino High, clad in blue for boys and a pink for girls, bolted from their classrooms and poured out into the yard as the lunch bell rang.

However, in one classroom, one person remained in his seat. He had no intentions of going outside. He was a short boy with spiky yellow hair. He had purple eyes and was playing with a small barrel of some sort. He was slowly and carefully attempting to insert a miniature sword into a slot on the side.

Suddenly, a tall boy with a basketball in his hand popped his head into the room and spotted the little boy.

"Hey Yugi!" the boy with the ball called out. "Quit playing games with yourself and come and play basketball for once!"

"No thanks," answered Yugi as a pirate figure popped out of the barrel in front of him with a boing! "I'll just be a burden for my team."

The boy with the ball shrugged and exited the room, bouncing the ball as he left.

Yugi sighed sadly as he packed up the barrel and shoved it into his bag underneath his desk.

"I wish someone would play one of my games with me," he said sadly. "I always bring heaps in my bag but…"

He grinned as he felt around in his backpack and pulled out a golden box with a wadjet eye on the front. It had Egyptian markings all over it and looked old and ancient.

"I can always complete the puzzle," Yugi finished, referring to the puzzle within the golden box. "What's inside is my greatest treasure," he said to himself not noticing that two people had silently entered the room. "And the only way to find out what is inside is to answer the riddle. What can you show but can't see?"

He stopped and waited for somebody to answer, no one did, and Yugi still didn't notice the two people who had now snuck up behind him.

Yugi shrugged. "The answer is…" he started as he went to lift the lid, only for a hand to snatch the box away.

Yugi gasped as he looked up to see the smirking face of Joseph "Joey" Wheeler. He was tall, and had blond bushy hair and brown eyes.

"Waddup!" Joey spat as he examined the golden box he held in his hands.

"Joey!" snapped Yugi, slightly irritated.

"Why are you talking to yourself Yugi?" asked a boy standing next to Joey. He was as tall as Joey and had brown hair that spiked forward at the front. A puzzled expression was evident on his face. He was Joey's best friend, Tristan Taylor. "You win first prize for creepy," he snorted with a laugh.

"Something you can show but can't see?" commented Joey as he recited Yugi's riddle.

"Give it back Joey!" shouted Yugi as he stood up, only for Joey to throw it over to Tristan who caught it.

"And its an amazing pass!" cheered Joey sarcastically.

"Be careful!" snapped Yugi in anger.

"What was that?" snickered Tristan in reply as he held his empty hand to his ear. "Did you say not to be careful?"

"No-" started Yugi before Tristan cut him off.

"Four!" he cried as he threw the box high into the air where Joey jumped up and snatched it with one hand before landing with ease.

"Please be careful!" Yugi pleaded in sorrow.

"What's wrong with you?" asked Joey in disgust. "Crying over this? What are you a baby? Only a girl would care about a box."

Yugi gritted his teeth in reply.

"Watching you be all puny and scared makes me sick," continued Joey as he held the box above his head. "So you know what? I'm going to show you how to be a man. You want this box? Then give me all you've got!" Joey hit his chest a few times and gave Yugi a fierce glare.

"No way!" answered Yugi in defiance. "I hate fighting!"

"You got no guts!" Joey shrugged. "What a girl!"

"Come on," Yugi groaned. "Please give it back now."

"No way!" snickered Tristan. "Why would we do that?"

"Hey what's in here anyway?" asked Joey as he looked at the box. "Let's take a peek."

"You can," answered Yugi. "But don't lose anything, its real important to me."

Joey lifted the lid slightly so he could see in with his right eye. He then closed it and simply stated, "How dumb."

"Dumb?" Yugi mumbled, insulted.

"Here Tristan," said Joey as he threw it over to his friend. However, a hand shot out and caught it before it made it to him. The hand belonged to a tall girl with short brown hair and blue eyes.

"People who pick on kids is what's dumb," the girl said. "Get out of here you bullies!"

"Tea!" shouted Yugi in joy. "Nice catch!"

"Meddling girl!" scowled Joey as he and Tristan exited the room.

"Thanks for that Tea," Yugi said in relief. "I thought they'd never leave."

"They're not that tough," observed Tea as she placed the box down on Yugi's desk. "Anyway, what is this?"

"Oh right," said Yugi as he placed his hand on the top of the box. "You haven't seen this before have you? I'll show you if you promise not to tell anyone."

Tea shrugged and eyed the box. "Sure."

Yugi nodded in reply and pulled the lid off, revealing sparking gold puzzle pieces of all different sizes and shapes. One of these pieces had a rope strung around it so it could be worn once the puzzle was completed.

"Wow!" exclaimed Tea as she picked up two of the gold pieces. "This is incredible. Golden puzzle pieces?"

Yugi laughed and picked up two pieces also. "It's a puzzle alright. But I've never finished it before, so I don't know what it looks like. Therefore, it's something you can show but can't see."

"Clever," commented Tea. "But where did you find something like this?"

"You know how my grandpa runs a game store right?" answered Yugi.

"Yeah," Tea replied.

"Well," continued Yugi. "I was looking through the basement one day and I found this high up on a shelf all covered in dust. Grandpa didn't want it, so I took it for myself."

"Are these hieroglyphics?" asked Tea, pointing to the Egyptian markings on the box.

Yugi nodded. "According to Grandpa, the box was found in an Egyptian ruin."

"Egypt huh," said Tea.

"The hieroglyphics on the box are supposed to refer to something about the puzzle," continued Yugi as he glanced at the said markings. "I haven't been able to translate it and Grandpa says it's a different form of normal Egyptian writing. But I bet it says something like, 'the one who completes this puzzle shall get one wish.' Or maybe I'm just hoping for too much?"

Tea laughed. "It's good to dream and you should follow them."

"Thanks Tea," answered Yugi as he placed the golden pieces back in the box and put the lid back on. "Now be sure to keep this secret and to not tell anyone."

Tea nodded. "Don't worry, you secret is safe with me."

Yugi sighed. "This puzzle is very hard though. I've been working on it for eight years and I haven't solved it. Kind of depressing."

Tea smiled. "Don't worry Yugi, I'm sure you'll finish it some day."

Yugi returned the smile. "Thanks Tea."

"So what's your wish?" Tea asked.

Yugi shook his head and laughed. "Never telling. That is a secret that shall be stored away for all eternity."

Meanwhile, Joey and Tristan were wondering the halls after their encounter with Yugi and Tea.

"Boy she makes me mad," scowled Joey, referring to Tea as he stuffed his hands into his pockets. "And she called us bullies."

"We'll," answered Tristan as they rounded a corner, not realizing they were about to walk into someone. "We kind of are."

Suddenly, they bumped into a big tall boy with a 'Hall Monitor' band strapped to his arm. He had black hair that spiked up at the front and was taller then Joey and Tristan.

"What were you saying about bullies?" asked the boy.

"Nothing," answered Joey rudely. "Sat out of this you-"

Tristan nearly had a heart attack as Joey spoke and quickly placed his hands over Joey's mouth to shut him up.

"It's nothing!" panicked Tristan as he held Joey back.

"Picking on people is bad," warned the Boy as he began to walk away.

"That is so true," answered Tristan before whispering into Joey's ear. "Who do you think you're picking a fight with? That's Tetsu Trudge, the hall monitor. He makes all of the rules here. Even the teachers are too scared of him to say anything."

Once Trudge was a safe distance away, Tristan let go of Joey's mouth and sighed with relief.

"What the hell man!" snapped Joey. "I couldn't breathe!"

"That was close," sighed Tristan, ignoring Joey.

"I'm going to get you one day Trudge!" cursed Joey at the ceiling.

"Man life is so dull," Tristan commented as he kicked the wall.

"Hey check out what I got," smirked Joey as he dug into his pocket and pulled out a golden puzzle piece with a wadjet eye.

"What's that?" questioned Tristan.

"Something I snuck out of Yugi's treasure box," answered Joey. "I only got a glimpse, but it looked like a puzzle. If he doesn't have this piece he can't complete it."

Tristan snorted. "Good work Joey."

"I'll take this and do this!" Joey laughed as the chucked the piece out the window where it landed in the school's pool.

'Treasure?' thought Joey in disgust. 'He talks like a girl. That really pisses me off.'

"Let's go," suggested Tristan as he and Joey walked away.

At the same time, the puzzle piece sunk to the bottom of the pool.

As the school bell rang for the final time that day, the students from Domino High rushed out.

Yugi smiled up at the sun as he exited the building. "Time to go home."

However, as he went to take a step, a big solid hand came down on his shoulder. Yugi looked up and saw that it belonged to Trudge.

"Hold it Yugi," he said. "I'm Trudge, the hall monitor."

Yugi felt awkward and scared all at once. "High," he managed to get out.

"I want to ask you something," continued Trudge as he took his hand away and folded his arms. "Are you being bullied by certain kids in your class."

Yugi shook his head. "Nothing like that happens to me."

"Hold on," interrupted Trudge. "Victims often defend their attackers. But don't worry Yugi, I'll be your body guard for now on."

"Okay," Yugi answered as he walked away, still startled at what just happened.

Trudge smiled as Yugi walked away. 'I've found a good dupe.'

As Yugi arrived at the Kame Game Shop, he smiled. "I'm home."

"Hey Yugi," said Tea as she approached Yugi.

"Tea?" questioned Yugi. "What are you doing here?"

"I thought I'd come over and hang out," Tea replied.

Yugi nodded. "Come on in."

He opened the door and ushered Tea in. The room was green, and had shelves of different kinds of games stashed on them. At the counter stood an old man with grey spiky hair and a short beard wearing overalls.

"Welcome home Yugi," greeted Solomon Moto. "And I see you've brought Tea home with you."

"Nice to see you again Mr. Moto," said Tea.

"Nice to see you too," Solomon answered.

Yugi immediately began to walk up the stairs to his room. "Let's go Tea. We can do our homework in my room and then work on the puzzle."

Solomon laughed. "What's this Yugi? You still haven't given up on that puzzle?"

Yugi sighed. "How'd give up?"

"The Millennium Puzzle is beyond human understanding," explained Solomon. "It's too hard for you. And it has all sorts of unusual rumors surrounding it."

"Rumors?" questioned Tea.

Solomon nodded. "The Millennium Puzzle was discovered at the beginning of the 21th century, and it was many years before it was actually taken from the tomb. Before it was finally taken, many archeologists attempted to discover the puzzle, and none returned. All but one, who said with his dying breathes, the shadow games."

"Yugi that puzzle is dangerous," warned Tea. "You might get cursed."

Yugi ignored her and took out the box from his bag. "What is the 'shadow games,' they sound cool?"

"Who cares," answered Tea. "It's cursed."

Yugi ignored her again. "So far, only one side of the box has had its hieroglyphics deciphered. They say the one who solves me shall gain the power and knowledge of darkness."

"But it's cursed!" Tea exclaimed.

"Now I'm really pumped to finish this puzzle!" declared Yugi.

Solomon made a grab for the puzzle, but Yugi moved it away.

"Oh just give it to me," Solomon urged. "The price it would bring."

"No way am I letting you sell this," answered Yugi.

Later at Night-

Yugi sighed as he continued to fiddle with the unfinished puzzle and tried slotting random pieces together.

"I always get stuck at this part," he cursed as he placed his head down on his desk and fell asleep.

The Next Day at Domino High-

Yugi yawned as he sat at his desk. "I really shouldn't have worked so late on the puzzle. Now I'm tired."

Suddenly, Trudge popped his head into the room, catching Yugi's attention.

"Yugi," Trudge said. "I want to show you something."

Back of the School-

"What is it you wanted to show me?" asked Yugi as he and Trudge rounded yet another corner.

"You'll see soon," Trudge answered. "And you're going to like it."

They rounded one final corner, and sitting up against a wall, all bloody and beaten was Joey and Tristan.

"Look Yugi," laughed Trudge as he gestured to Yugi's beaten up classmates.

"Tristan! Joey!" shouted Yugi in horror. "What in the world!"

"I told you Yugi," answered Trudge with a smile. "I'm your body guard now. I decided to teach these punks a lesson, one they'll never forget."

"This is wrong Trudge!" cried Yugi before running up to Joey and Tristan. "Are you okay?" he asked.

Joey spat blood from his mouth, while Tristan groaned.

"Are you happy now Yugi?" Joey asked.

"I had nothing to do with this!" answered Yugi. "I swear!"

"Back off Yugi!" interrupted Trudge as he pushed Yugi out of the way. "I'm not done punishing them."

Joey went to stand up, but Trudge sent a kick into his stomach, knocking him down.

"Stop!" roared Yugi as he ran in front of Trudge and flung his arms out.

"What's this?" laughed Trudge. "You're protecting them? You are a strange one Yugi. These are the guys who pick on you. Now's your chance to get them back."

"I can't do that to my friends!" protested Yugi, shocking Joey.

"Seriously?" snorted Trudge. "These are the guys who pick on you and you call them your friends."

"They weren't picking on me," answered Yugi. "They were teaching me to be a man."

Trudge shrugged. "Whatever. You still have to pay me what you owe. Body guard charges, 200,000 yen."

"200,000 yen!" gasped Yugi.

"That's right," snickered Trudge. "For that much yen, I get to beat them to a pulp as much as you want. You can even take out your daily troubles on them."

Yugi didn't answer.

"What's this?" smirked Trudge. "You aren't satisfied. Do you want me to hit them more?"

"Don't touch these two any more!" retorted Yugi. "If you're going to hurt someone, hurt me!"

Joey gasped in shock at what he had just heard.

"You're beyond strange," commented Trudge. "You're crazy." He then picked up Yugi by the collar so that they were at eye level. "Normally I hate picking on people, but this isn't bullying. This is warning. I'll show you what will happen if you don't pay up."

Yugi opened his mouth to say something, but Trudge elbowed him across the face, sending blood flying from Yugi's mouth. He then dropped Yugi the ground with a thump and kneed him into the wall.

'Why?' thought Joey. 'Why are you dong this Yugi? If you kept quite and didn't saying anything, if you didn't resist, you wouldn't get hurt. Why are you protecting us?'

As Trudge began sending waves of punches and kicks towards Yugi, he thought to himself. 'I made a wish on the puzzle. I wished for friends. Friends who I could count on. Friends who could count on me no matter what.'

Yugi screamed as Trudge threw him into the wall and he crumbled to the ground.

"I'll leave it at this," Trudge snorted. "Bring the money tomorrow, got it? If you break our promise, you'll get more then this. I'll teach you even more pain." Trudge pulled out a knife and licked the blade sinisterly before walking off, laughing as he did it.

'That creep,' thought Yugi. 'He's the worst of the worst. But there's nothing I can do. He's so big and powerful; I couldn't touch him in a million years. Maybe giving him the money is all I can do.'

Kame Game-

Yugi groaned as he touched the wounds on his face that he had covered in band-aids. He then looked at his desk where he had all of his money laid out.

"1,656 yen," Yugi counted. "There's no way I'll come up with 200,000 yen. What should I do? If I don't pay, he'll beat me up again."

Yugi instinctively picked up the puzzle and began to fiddle with it. He then sighed and threw the puzzle onto the table.

"This isn't the time for that," he sighed. "But I can't think of anything to do. At least working on it makes me feel better."

Yugi picked up the puzzle again and placed a piece in. Surprisingly, it fit.

"Hey," cheered Yugi. "It went in. I get it now, after you put a piece in, you give it a half turn."

Yugi did just this and the piece went it. He continued this over and over again.

"Strange," he commented. "Solving this is easy today, even though I feel awful."

Yugi continued this trend to the point that the puzzle looked like an upsized down pyramid. Now only one piece was left, the center one.

"I did it," Yugi gasped. "When I fit the last part in, it's done."

Yugi reached into the box for the last piece, but it wasn't there.

"It's gone!" cried Yugi. "The last piece is gone! I must have dropped it somewhere!"

Yugi began frantically searching his room for the piece. He turned over pillows and cushions and searched through draws. But the piece wasn't there.

'It's gone,' thought Yugi as he sat at his desk, tears forming in his eyes. 'I'll never complete the puzzle. I'll never get my wish!'

Suddenly, Solomon entered and cried out in joy as he saw the nearly completed puzzle.

"I'm amazed!" he cheered. "You actually completed the Millennium Puzzle!"

Yugi just shook his head. "No I didn't grandpa. I couldn't finish it after all."

Solomon picked up the puzzle and examined the spot where the final piece was missing.

"I see," he said. "Yugi, you've poured your heart into this puzzle for the last eight years. You should be more faithful."

"Huh?" Yugi turned around in his seat to face his grandpa.

"Your wish shall be granted," Solomon finished as he held out his right hand to reveal the final puzzle piece, the one with the wadjet eye.

Yugi began to cry and jumped up to hug his grandpa. "Thank you, thank you grandpa! You found it for me!"

"It wasn't me Yugi," replied Solomon as Yugi took the puzzle piece. "A friend of yours just came by, told me to give it to you. He was soaking wet too, even though it wasn't raining."

Yugi nodded and took back the puzzle from Solomon.

'I wonder who it was?' thought Yugi.

'That boy told me everything,' thought Solomon to himself as Yugi went back to his desk. 'His name was Joey, told me not to tell you though. You told me your injuries were from when you got knocked over by a boy on his bike, but Joey told me a thug called Trudge was threatening you.'

Solomon silently went to Yugi's bag and slipped in an envelope.

'The money is in your bag Yugi,' Solomon thought. 'Hopefully this will help you stay out of trouble.'

"Good night Yugi," said Solomon as exited the room.

"Good night grandpa," answered Yugi as he looked at the puzzle in one hand and then to the final piece in his other.

'I'm finally going to complete the Millennium Puzzle,' he thought as he placed the piece in.

'I'm so amazed he finished the puzzle,' thought Solomon as he walked down the stairs. 'But that's my grandson. It's written in the Book of Dead that the one who solves the puzzle inherits the shadow games. He becomes the guardian of right and passes judgment on evil.'

Yugi gasped as the puzzle's wadjet eye lit up, illuminating the room. At the same time, mystical energy flowed into Yugi and a glowing wadjet appeared on his forehead.

"Yu-Gi-Oh!" he cried out as he transformed for the first time, into the King of Games!

'I think Trudge might be the one in trouble,' Solomon thought.

Midnight at Domino High-

Trudge scowled at the moon in his black jacket and jeans.

"I can't believe Yugi called me out this late," he growled. "And at the school."

Suddenly, from out of knowhere appeared Yugi with the Millennium Puzzle hanging around his neck. He was different however. He was now slightly taller and his hair flew up more. His eyes were now different and were sharper.

"Yugi," grumbled Trudge.

Yugi smiled. "Thanks for coming Trudge." His voice was now different as well. It was deeper and darker.

"Looks like you're going to be a good boy and give me what I want" snarled Trudge as he flung his hand out. "Body guard charges, 200,000 yen!"

"It's right here," answered Yugi as he held up a pile of bills. "And I've raised it to 400,00."

'400,000 yen!' thought Trudge in joy.

"But this is so much money," continued Yugi. "It would be no fun just to hand it over. How about you play a game with me?"

"Game?" questioned Trudge.

"Not just any game," answered Yugi as the wind blew around him. A shadow game. If you win you get more then 200,000 yen. Not bad of a deal?"

Trudge smirked. "Interesting."

"We need just one tool to play this game," Yugi explained as he pointed at Trudge's coat. "That hidden knife you've got."

Trudge laughed as he pulled out the said weapon and handed it over to Yugi. He then walked over to a small pillar, no higher then his waist and placed it down on it with the money.

"Everything's ready," he said.

'What kind of game can we play with a money and knife?' thought Trudge as he walked over to the other side of the pillar.

"I'll explain the rules," said Yugi. "The players take turns placing the bills on their hands and stabbing it with a knife. The player's take only the bills they stab and they must always stab more then one bill. The game continues until all the money is gone. The challenge is to take as much money as possible. If a player tries to take the money by hand or quit in the middle, he loses and forfeits all of his money to their opponent. Doesn't that sound interesting?"

Trudge laughed. "So it's a test of courage?"

'Is this Yugi?' he thought. 'He's like a completely different person.'

"But if you break the rules," explained Yugi. "The penalty game decides your fate."

Trudge nodded. "Let's begin."

"We'll do rock paper scissors to see who goes first," suggested Yugi and they counted to three.

"Paper!" Yugi held his hand sprawled out to represent paper.

"Rock!" Trudge held his hand out in a fist to represent rock.

"I win," Yugi stated. "I go first."

"Crap," commented Trudge.

Yugi placed the pile of bills on his hand and slowly brought the knife down upon it. He sighed as he pulled out the knife with nine bills skewered.

"I didn't even get ten bills," he commented. "But they're not easy to stab. Now it's your turn."

Yugi passed the knife to Trudge who then placed the bills on his left hand. He looked down uneasily at the bills.

Yugi folded his arms and watched. "If you use too much strength you'll stab yourself. The point of this game is to control your greed."

"Shut your trap!" snapped Trudge as he brought the knife down on the pile, stabbing around about 30 bills.

"Look at that!" he laughed. "Over 100,000 yen and not a mark on my hand! I should have stabbed harder!"

"Not bad," Yugi shrugged as he went to take his turn. "But it get's harder to control your strength with each turn." He then stabbed some bills with the knife.

It was only a few more turns and there was not a lot of money left. It was Trudge's turn again.

'There's nothing to this game,' he thought with a grin. 'The rest of the money is mine.' As he went to stab, his grip on the knife tightened and his arm tensed.

'What?' he thought in confusion. 'My arm? My arm isn't listening to my brain. It's trying to stab with all of its strength. I can't relax it. This isn't good.' Sweat began to pour from his face. 'If I swing with this might, I'm going to stab all the money and my left hand.'

Yugi watched as Trudge struggled. 'In the shadow games a person's true nature is revealed to decide their fate. Trudge, your right arm is now controlled by your greed. You cannot stop it. Will you sacrifice your hand to get the money? Or…'

"The answer is simple!" grinned Trudge. "There's a way I can take a stab, without hurting my left hand and get all the money! You let me hold this knife, that's why you lose Yugi!"

Trudge turned to Yugi as brought the knife down to Yugi's head, who simply smirked. The Millennium Puzzle's eye glowed and a multicoloured energy shield blocked the knife, sending it flying away.

The shield dissipated and the glowing wadjet eye appeared on Yugi's forehead.

"What the heck?" gasped Trudge.

"Just as I thought!" cried Yugi. "You couldn't follow the rules! Now that you've trespassed in my soul and hurt my friends, you shall face your punishment!"

Yugi flung his hand out towards Trudge and cried, "Penalty Game! Illusion of Avarice!"

Trudge cried out as there was an explosion of light and suddenly, there was money all around him.

"What's happening?" he panicked as heaps of money surrounded him. "What's going on?" Quickly, the money began to get higher and higher until Trudge was drowning in it.

"No!" he screamed in horror. "Help! Someone get me out!"

"They say money can make your head spin," commented Yugi. "How right they were. Now that you've got what you always wanted, you want it to go away. How ironic."

Yugi smiled as he walked off into the night, with the only sound being Trudge's screams and pleas for help.

The Next Morning At Domino High-

The kids were all crowding around one particular thing that morning. It was the feared hall monitor Tetsu Trudge. But everyone was laughing at him as he squirmed on the ground and was shouting delusional things.

"Help me!" he cried. "I'm drowning! I'm drowning in money!"

"Looks like he finally had a mental breakdown!"

"Maybe no one liking him finally got to him!"

Domino High Inside-

Yugi yawned as he wandered the halls. "I can't remember anything from last night after I completed the puzzle." He then smiled down at the pendant, which hung around his neck. "That's right, I finally completed it!"

He cried out in joy as he threw it into the air, before catching it and putting it back on.

As he rounded a corner, he spotted Joey leaning against a locker with bandages on his face from the wounds he got from being attacked by Trudge.

"Yo Yugi," he said. "How are you doing?"

"Fine," answered Yugi. "How are you?"

"This is nothing," Joey replied as he gestured to his bandages. "Happens to me all the time. Oh by the way, if you can keep a treasure than so can I. Want to see?"

Yugi smiled. "Sure."

"You can't," Joey answered. "But I'll give you a hint. It's something you can show but can't see."

"Hey that's my riddle," observed Yugi.

"It's friendship," Joey said. "It's something you can show but can't see. Thanks for being there for me Yugi, were friends now."

'Friends?' thought Yugi in surprise.

"See ya around." Joey smiled as he walked off.
