Reisender
Disclaimer: The Night World belongs to L.J. Smith and not me. I'm just borrowing the concept (and only the concept) for fun, and not making any profit off it. The plot and all characters in the story belong to me.
Author's note: Yes, I'm starting another fanfic, now that The Executioners is done. Hopefully it won't take me quite as long to write this one. :-) I realize this prologue doesn't say much, but I wanted it to be separate from chapter 1, which I have yet to write. Hehe. Hope you like this story!
Prologue: Oops
The two women huddled against each other as they hurried down the empty sidewalk. The walked in silence, their heads leaning forward with purpose. Fog pressed around them, obscuring everything outside a ten-foot radius and dampening sounds.
One, wearing a threadbare brown coat with a hood, finally spoke as they reached an alley. "Hurry," she whispered. The other nodded, and they picked up their pace down the alley.
A wall appeared out of the fog at the end, and the second woman waved her hand in front of it. A flash of light, and a door stood in the wall.
"Get inside," she ordered.
The two entered a room with shelves and tables full of mysterious objects. Once inside the safety of the room, the one in the brown coat leaned against the door and sighed in relief. She threw off her hood, revealing long, dark hair and violet eyes.
"We made it," she breathed.
The other woman, older, with gray streaking her light brown hair, motioned with her hand. "Give it to me. We must hide it."
The younger woman nodded and reached into her pocket. The color drained from her face as she felt around in her pocket.
"What is it?" the older demanded.
The younger swallowed. "It's not in my pocket," she said quietly. She looked at the ground.
The other's eyes bulged. "What do you mean it's not in your pocket? Look again!"
"I did!" The younger woman turned out her pockets helplessly. "It must have fallen out on the street. I know I put it in my pocket."
Red flooded the older woman's cheeks. "How could you be so careless? Do you know what could happen if the wrong person finds it?"
The younger woman nodded miserably.
The older rubbed her forehead. "It's okay. We'll just retrace our steps, and we're bound to find it."
The two followed their steps back and forth the way they came three times, but the object was nowhere to be found.
