Fidgeting

Every night, when the cannon fired, I wondered what poor kid had died. After all, that's what we all were if you if you thought about it: poor. It's weird how one single word with only four letters could mean so much.

Being thrown into this arena made us all…cruel, in a way. Killing other children for food. Maybe, had we been able to talk, we could have banded together and fought back. Maybe we could have stuck together and all come out victors, that or be trapped there forever.

Katniss. I wondered if she even thought about me as I did. I wasn't lying when I said I loved her. She was surely okay, right? I was…safe, not okay, though. If I wasn't to win, if I died before the end, I hoped, prayed, that she would win.

"Peeta?" I heard someone whisper. "Peeta, you awake?" I bolted up and tried to remember where I was. "Sorry." My eyes adjust to the darkness and I located Katniss a few feet away.

"What? Is something wrong?" I asked, alert in my weka state. She shook her head quickly.

"No, no, it's just…you were fidgeting," she said, moving to sit by me.

"Fidgeting?" I asked, sitting up. She nodded.

"Yeah, like you were having a nightmare or something."

"Katniss, I am living a nightmare."

"I know," she said, sighing. I put my arm around her shoulders and pulled her to my side.

"We'll make it."

"I know, Peeta," she said.

"Perk up then," I said. She gave me a look.

"It's the Hunger Games, Peeta, no one's perky," she pointed out. I shrugged and glanced towards the entrance, hoping she understood what I meant.

"Get some sleep, Peeta, you're going to need your strength." I opened my mouth to protest, but she was already pushing me back down into the sleeping bag.

"You win. For now," I said jokingly. She rolled her eyes and I drifted off to sleep.

I woke up to the sun in my eyes and the smell of the rabbit Katniss had apparently caught cooking. My stomach rumbled, but it would just have to wait. After all, this was the Hunger Games.

I stood and looked around the cave. I looked at the opening and wondered if I would be able to climb. I didn't think so. I sat back down to wait for Katniss…that was if she was coming back. Nah, she wouldn't leave her pack.

Sure enough, she emerged through the opening. I looked hungrily at the rabbit in her hand. Oh, jeesh, it looked so good. Well, either that or I was just that hungry.

"Morning," she said, putting the rabbit down.

"Morning," I said.

"Hungry?"

"Yeah. "So am I."

"But we can't eat it all," I pointed out.

"Yeah, I know," she said, sighing.

"But….it shouldn't go to waste either."

"Yeah," she said, smiling. She handed me a leg. "To surviving." And we dug in.
