A Good Detective

A/N: After watching the latest episode I had to write this. One-shot between Juliet and Lassiter.

After splashing wine in Shawn's face, Juliet stormed outside to the patio. Her hands were shaking in anger. How could she be so stupid? she thought. Her worst fears were coming true. She had inherited her mother's bad taste in men.

Too preoccupied with the ranting in her head, she missed the fact that someone had just joined her outside.

Carlton, all smiles in wedded bliss, stepped outside with a glass of water to get some air after dancing with Marlowe. He was mid way through taking a sip of water when he noticed Juliet pacing furiously.

"What's the matter?" He said, bringing her out of her thoughts.

Juliet spun around and gave him a hard stare. Carlton knew that look. His expressions softened at his partner's distress. With the ease that comes from knowing someone closely for a number of years she got right to her point.

"He's not psychic!" She yelled at him, tears running down her face.

"Well, of course he isn't, O'Hara! There is no such thing."

Juliet sniffled in surprise. "How long have you known?"

He sighed, closed the distance between them, and took her hands in his.

"From the start I had my doubts; but it really didn't sink in until we started working with Henry. I saw how passionate he was about the force and I knew there was no way he wouldn't have tried to groom his only child to follow in his footsteps." He paused and saw his words were not comforting her.

"I saw Spencer for who he was: hyper observant, and a damn good detective who could operate outside the rules, all in the name of justice. I didn't say anything because I knew how badly you wanted to believe. I know you have trust issues regarding men because of your father, but I honestly think it all comes down to intent. Your dad was in those cons for his own personal gain. Spencer uses his con to help people get the truth. I think you should take that into an account."

Juliet sniffled again. She gave Carlton a half smile, realizing that this was one of the rare times in which he has paid Shawn a compliment.

Realizing that look in her eyes, he added, "And, when you do start talking to him again, don't tell him any of what I said, especially the part where I called him a good detective."

This got a chuckle out of her as she went to hug him. He was a very good friend. After a moment they parted.

"Are you going to be ok?" He asked.

"Yeah, yeah, I'll be fine. Why don't you get back to your bride. I'm sure she is looking for you." She said, giving him a watery smile.

With one more reassuring squeeze of her hands, he pulled away and walked back into the reception hall to find Marlowe. Juliet turned around to face the lawn as she pulled her arms around to hug herself. She didn't know where this left her and Shawn, but Carlton had left her a lot to think about.
