Dawn was just breaking, streaking the sky pink with splashes of blue, lavender and orange. Wisps of cotton clouds drifted among the bursts of colour. The crisp air was still and laced with morning freshness. Gravel crunched under your sandals as you walked along the dirt path.

As you approached the memorial stone, you could just make out a figure standing in front of the stone, hands in pockets, head down, silver hair wafting in the breeze. He was a familiar figure to you now, as he came here every day, like you did, to gaze at the names engraved on the stone, names of those who had fallen in the Third Great Ninja War. Specifically, the names of his teammates.

You approached his side quietly, crouched down and placed a bunch of gardenias, your late parents' favourite flowers, on the stone steps. Then you straightened up, stepped back, pressed your hands together in prayer and bowed. When you had straightened up again, Kakashi glanced at you. "... _-san." You nodded slightly to him. "Hatake-san." You two resumed gazing at the names on the stone, a stark reminder of those horrible war-torn days. And more importantly to you, those who had lost their lives because of humanity's greed.

As the sky's colour lightened into a clear, pale blue, you moved for the first time in five and a half hours, clearing your head of thoughts of your fallen comrades. You looked up at Kakashi, who had a lost, far-away look in his eyes. "Hatake-san, it's eleven a.m. already. You'll be late again." He snapped out of his reverie. "Hmm? Oh, it's okay. I'm always late, anyway." He waved a hand at you. "Well... if you're sure. I'll make a move first. See you." You nodded to him, made a hand seal and vanished with a soft poof. Kakashi stared at the spot where you had just been standing. "...See you."

Two days later, you were assigned a mission to assassinate a S-ranked criminal with a fellow jonin. You were not told who was your mission partner, only to meet at the main gate. It was always easier to work under the cover of darkness; thus it was already dusk when you arrived silently at the gate. A scuff of a sandal behind you; you whirled. You saw Kakashi walking towards you. "...Hatake-san? You're my mission partner?" "It appears so. I didn't think it would be you, _-san." You half smiled. "Neither did I, Hatake-san. Let's go." You turned to go, but Kakashi caught your arm. "Wait, _-san. Please, call me Kakashi." Your face broke into a smile. "Then call me _, please."

"It's a deal."

The mission went without a hitch. Both of you returned to Konoha safely, with the body of the criminal. The next day, you arrived at the memorial stone earlier than usual. As you expected, Kakashi was already there. You laid the fresh gardenias on the stone, stepped back, pressed your palms together and bowed. Then you nodded to Kakashi, a hint of a smile on your face. "...Kakashi-kun." He glanced at you, amusement flickering in his one visible eye. "Good morning, _-chan." Both of you continued to gaze at the names etched in stone, as the dawn of the new day broke above your heads...
