There is a certain license to love, L thought. You give some and you get some back, in most conventional cases. An extent to which this 'love,' this majestic, amazing feeling, that is yours, can exist. A time that is reached when it is no longer fair to allow one person so much love.

That is when God takes it back, he thought dubiously as he tugged his lips down with a finger. There is a time when this license expires, when it is taken away.

Shifting subtly on his feet, he looked pointedly at the simple, nondescript black cross that marked a shallow hump of dirt, the whole image so unlike the person who'd been so amazingly, terribly, and brilliantly luminous in his life, that it seemed a sin in its own to send him off this way.

But there was little to do, L thought. He himself had killed his own family, the only people that existed who unconditionally loved him and would protest his plight. Misa Amane had followed soon after; after his license to tolerate her had expired, his brilliant mind had formulated an easy plan to rid him of Rem and then her with a simple snap of his finger. The crew had dispersed, some dead, some not, all eagerly leaving the team as they watched their chief lose his life and then slowly, L lose all enthusiasm for the case, leaving their own pursuits completely hopeless. Takada was gone, Watari held less than affectionate emotions for the one who sodomized his "child," and there was nothing left to be said for the boy known as Light Yagami.

There was nobody left. Nobody who would remember fondly or miss the terribly brilliant boy who had changed the world, arguably more than any other singular being had done before. Nobody, that is, but L.

And his own license to love, to keep his Light alive, had already expired.

"It was nice loving you", L whispered, letting the moment's emotions wash over him in a wave that could do no more than moisten his eyes. He'd cried enough for an entire lifetime when Light was alive.

With a last, lingering look at the grave of the one who'd utterly and completely changed his world, L turned around and walked back to the helicopter that Watari had prepared for him earlier that day.

"I'll be seeing you."
