Falling faster and faster, Galvrand attempted to grab hold of some kind of ledge to try and stop him or at least slow his fast descent down.
As he fell he could feel the air around him become stuffy and smelled of rotten flesh; it made him sick to his stomach and he began gasping for air as the disgusting smell filled his lungs.
As a last and panicked resort, he grabbed his knife and slammed it into the stone wall; sliding down the wall, throwing sparks from the knife, he finally caught hold in a small crevice deep enough for the knife to slide in.
The force of the stop jerking his arm, almost pulling it from its socket; Galvrand grabbed a match and lit it off his Mithril belt buckle, waving it around to get a good look at his surroundings and possibly seeing an escape route. In the corner of the wall a few feet down to his right, he saw a hole big enough to fit his hand.
He put his hand into the hole and felt a pole about three feet long lodged in the back. He pulled with all his might and the wall begin to separate; he felt fresh air hit his face and he took in deep, greedy breaths as he climbed into the opening.
"Now that's what I'm talking about!" he screamed into the black abyss of the drop he just escaped, "what am I suppose to do now?" he said out loud, looking around; he saw a slight crack in the wall next to him and could see light coming through, he smiled to himself.
Galvrand began chipping away the rock with his knife, widening the hole with every piece of rock chipped away; he became frantic, hacking and stabbing at the rock hoping it was a way out into the open and free world; he didn't even notice his finger had been cut to the bone when his blade jerked back from one of his frantic stabs and embedded itself in his ring finger.
Blood flowing freely and without proper cauterization, he would need to cut it off, but now was not the time; he started pulling the stones with his hands now, making the hole big enough for him to crawl through; on the other side he could see a bright light at the end of the tunnel to his left.
He began running down the tunnel paying no heed to his surroundings, only focused on that light. As he approached he could smell flowers and could hear the sound of running water; stepping up to the lip of the ledge he stared out at the bright, beautiful world he had missed for so long.
He had made it.
