An answer to the New Year's Resolution challenge by ladygris. 350 words.

At Midnight

A kiss at midnight was the last thing Rodney expected. Truth was he'd decided not to attend the New Year's Eve Party at all, but Colonel Carter insisted it would be good for morale, and Colonel Sheppard appeared an hour before to drag him, protesting all the way, to the rec room.

The pair of soft, wet lips massaging his own made him reconsider. He moaned as the woman broke contact. Her taste lingered, as did her heady perfume. One year he'd shared an awkward New Year's kiss with a female friend. This was something more.

"Not that I'm complaining," he said, "but why did you do that?"

The smile broke wide on her face as it always did. She never smiled halfheartedly, this intriguing woman. It was all or nothing with Jennifer Keller.

Five minutes before midnight she had appeared, drink in hand, and maneuvered him away from the crowd. Mindful of the time, he tried to escape. But she persisted in sticking with him, and when the crowd began their chant of "Ten, nine, eight, seven," she set down their drinks, raised her chin, and conquered him with her lips.

Answering his question, she said, "I want to get to know you better."

"That's one hell of an introduction."

She replied with a shrug. "You're one hell of a guy."

Groaning, he rolled his eyes.

"What? It's true." She laid a hand on his chest. "Rodney, you're unlike anyone I've ever met. You're smart, driven, and not afraid to speak your mind. It's refreshing."

"Sure, it's refreshing now, but give it a couple of weeks."

"All right." Jennifer nodded decisively. "It's a deal."

He blinked. "What's a deal?"

"We'll try this—you and me—for two weeks. If it works out, fine. If not, we go back to being friends, no hard feelings." The hand on his chest traveled to the back of his neck to pull him down for another soul-searing kiss. "Consider it a New Year's resolution."

"A resolution, eh?"

"Uh-huh." Her eyes twinkled. "Best one you ever made."

Wouldn't you know it? She was right.
