Kingdom Come
'Run, run, run and hide...
Somewhere no one else can find.
Tall trees bend and lean, pointing where to go...
Where you will still be all alone...'
- "Kingdom Come", The Civil Wars
...
Miles of endless forest... and he kept on running.
All he could do was run. There was no going back; he could only move forward. No, he couldn't hear them anymore, but how was he supposed to know they were long gone? That they had stopped chasing him once he had slipped through the hedge, to freedom and safety? No... They had left him.
And now Snowball was alone. An animal, a pig, in no man's land.
He continued running.
Wind blew as he literally flew past tall trees that watched him go. The wind seemed to be pushing him forward with hidden words. A part of him, -in his almost delirious, frightful state-, felt ashamed to be running away. He should turn back. Maybe...
Napoleon has taken over. It's all gone now.
And he paused, slowly coming to a halt at the realization that fear had blinded him from seeing. Snowball couldn't possibly go back... Not now. Maybe not ever. It would be a death sentence, and there would be no chance of him starting yet another rebellion with Napoleon's dogs guarding the entire farm. No... It would be impossible.
In the piercing silence, the wind calmly spoke to him in a voice barely above a whisper; a kind woman. A familiar kind woman. The voice he hadn't heard in years. And he wasn't sure if he was actually hearing his mother's voice or if fear was driving him to the brink of insanity.
"Don't you fret my dear," his mother, blended in the wind, calmly and softly spoke, "It'll all be over soon."
Who could be the real enemy? Napoleon was his long time foe, yes... but Jones, many years ago, had taken his mother away. Yes, Snowball remembered it clearly. Just a few months old, watching his mother being dragged away to the slaughter house. Bless her soul, she was a kind pig. Somewhere along the way that kindness had to end eventually, as did all kind forms of life. And as always, evil always took it's place.
It was ironic now seeing that Napoleon had now taken Snowball's place. Now he couldn't really tell who the real enemy was. Jones and all humans like him, or... Napoleon? Time would surely answer that question eventually... but Snowball had a feeling he already knew the real answer.
Panting, he slowly turned, staring down the direction from which he came. Miles of endless forest... He turned away.
"I'll be waiting here for you."
The wind blew once more, and for a moment, as he glanced up, it seemed as though the tree branches were moving in one single direction. Pointing which way to go. One way down the miles of endless forest...
...and he kept on running.
A/N: I've gotten back into my Animal Farm swing but hadn't had any inspiration until recently. After hearing "Kingdom Come" by The Civil Wars from the "Hunger Games" soundtrack this particular idea came to me. Not the best, but I wanted to write more for Animal Farm.
Anyway, I have another, much longer Animal Farm one-shot I'm working on; where Snowball comes back. Basically a Snowball vs Napoleon one-shot. ;)
Anyway, please review! :)
