Once upon a time, there was a little boy and a little girl. They lived alone together on a luscious island full of trees and grass. Everyday they would watch the sunrise walk through the forest and along the shore then they would fall asleep beneath the stars. Every morning the girl would say to the boy "The sunrises to see you, for you truly make it shine." The little boy would laugh and say "nonsense the sun has always risen just as it has always set." The girl would smile at him sadly and then they would set off to the forest. As they walked they would point out the animals that hid within the trees foliage. Then, the girl would say "Your eyes are so beautiful it makes the trees and plants green with envy" The boy would roll his eyes and say "Silly girl, the trees do not envy, for they are wise and were here far before you and I." Then they would walk along the shore and try to count the fish near the shore and the girl would say "look the sea creatures came to see you and look how the water reflect your bright smile." the boy would say "The sea creatures come to the coast because the water is warmer here and the water doesn't reflect my smile, it reflects the sun." Then they would head to the clearing in the middle of the forest and lay on the grass and look at the stars. Yet again the girl would say "look at the stars, gathered to see you? look the man on the moon is smiling down at you." The boy at this point was very tired and would just respond "it's simply not so, they are the path so the sun knows where to go during the day" then they would fall asleep in the grass.

One day, when they were walking along the shore, they came across a book on the shore. It told about far off lands and people from very different places. The boy was fascinated and read the book day in and day out. Then a ship docked upon their island. The men on the ship told stories of their homelands and the people there. they told of the buildings the foods and the animals there. The people stayed for almost a year. but the day came when they were to leave, and take the boy with it. "come with me" the boy said. "I can't, this is my home" The girl replied "it's yours too, why don't you stay?" The boy sighed and said "I want to see more of this world then this island." The girl then said "What about the sun? It won't rise unless you're here." "that's not true" he replied. "it has always risen, as it always will." The girl grew sad "Well what about the trees? They won't have you to envy, they will loose their colour." The boy smiled and said "where ever they got it before i was here. Perhaps they have always known how to be green" "The sea creatures and the water!" The girl pleaded. "the water will loose its shine and the animals will be lost if you are not here!" "nonsense, the sun will be here to guide them" The girl let out a sigh of frustration. "the stars, and the moon. it will be awfully dark if they're not here to see you." The boy smiled sadly and said "They will be here, don't worry. I have to go, but I will come back, I promise." With that the boy boarded the ship and they sailed off. That night, the clouds covered the sky.

The next morning the little girl woke up and saw that the sky was dark and pale. She went walking through the forest and saw the leave were all a pale gray no longer a vivid green. As she walked along the shore she looked at the water which had become dark and murky, vacant of all life. That night, the sky was empty and black, absent of all stars. Every day after that was the same. Now she would sit on the shore and wait for him to return. She waited and waited, but he never returned.
