It had been five years since Sasuke left. Orochimaru had taken over his body for two years before he died, killed in the final battle between the Sound and Konoha.
In the end, Naruto had been the one to deal the final blow, ridding the world of the snake Sannin and destroying all that remained of his friend.
However, the young blonde nin had sustained near-fatal injuries, yet, thanks to the Kyuubi and the attention of the medical ninja in Konoha, was only in a coma for two weeks before being released from the hospital.
After the battle, everyone was able to relax. The threat of the Sound Village was gone, along with the Akatsuki, who had been killed off slowly by Orochimaru and Sasuke.
Within the next year, the original genin group, now all either chuunin or jounin, had settled easily into their positions in life.
Soon after his recovery, an 18 year old Hinata had finally confessed her feelings to Naruto, and the two were very much in love. The same went for Shikamaru and Ino, Neji and Tenten. Even Lee had the hots for a spunky chuunin from the Mist. It seemed that everyone was going to live happily ever after.
And for the most part, they did, but for one exception…
