Disclaimer: I own nothing… except the spirit beast.

A/N: I seriously have no idea where this came from.

Hiei glared at the large egg propped up on the table. In the background, Boton twittered annoyingly, Yusuke let out a muffled guffaw, and, even though Hiei couldn't see him, he knew that Kurama was hiding a smile. At that moment, Hiei was personally trying to send out as much negative energy as possible. Being spirit beast food was preferable to the alternative at the moment.

It had been scarcely a month ago that Koenma had made the stunning revelation that he had found a spirit egg somewhere in the midst of the huge stack of papers in his office. Since he hadn't been able to recall the original owner of the egg, he assumed that it must have been Hiei's, created during his near-death after battling the Dark Surgeon. Hiei had protested that generally you had to actually die to receive a spirit egg but Koenma seemed adamant about giving him one anyway. Now, that egg was about to hatch and release something, hopefully something evil and frightening.

A sudden *CRACK* jerked Hiei from his reflections. Tiny fissures began erupting from the initial crack, spiderwebbing up and down the egg. Hiei fervently thought a few negative thoughts, mostly having to do with Koenma, praying that the thing would at least look evil. No! He couldn't pray… that would count as a good thing…

Then, the egg shattered. As smoke erupted from it, Hiei sat, preparing his katana for the horror he hoped he released. The smoke began to clear.

Hiei was not the first to see the beast. He had just been able to make out his own hand when Yusuke began to laugh loudly, gasping for breath, "Hahahahaha! Hiei….hahahaha, you're really so full of crap…haha…look… hahahaha!"

Soon, the others were laughing, too. Hiei glared pretty much indiscriminately at everybody and moved to where he could see the thing. When he finally saw it, he had a very strong desire to shed blood. And not his own.

The spirit beast was a little kitten with white paws and spiky black fur. Hiei glared at it for a moment before picking it up and handing it to Kuwabara.

"It's fairly obvious that this is Kuwabara's spirit beast," he said, before walking away to Kuwabara's happy exclamation of "Yay! A kitty!"

Before Hiei had walked three steps, however, he heard a startled yelp of pain and turned to see Kuwabara, clutching his newly injured hand and the kitten walking proudly towards Hiei with its tail erect in a saucy manner and blood on its claws. Hiei picked the kitten up and placed it on his shoulder before he turned and walked wordlessly away again.

Perhaps there were a few plusses to having a spirit beast.

A/N: Awwwww. Another cute Hiei story. I seriously don't know where these come from. Perhaps they grow.
